The Irvine Valley women's basketball team played a strong second half and pulled away to beat Orange Coast, 53-38, Wednesday night in an Orange Empire Conference game at OCC.
With the win, Irvine Valley stayed just a game behind Cypress for first place in conference.
Irvine Valley improved its record to 16-11 overall and 7-2 in conference. The Lasers have won three games in a row and six of their last seven.
After a first half that saw OCC and Irvine Valley tied, 22-22, the Lasers out-scored the Pirates, 31-16, in the second half.
Orange Coast made just 3 of 19 attempts from the field in the second half and committed 13 turnovers.
OCC finished the night shooting just 28.6 percent from the floor (12 of 42). For the Lasers, a 31-point second half was more than enough as freshman forward Shomari McCorkle led all scorers with 15 points.
She added six rebounds. Sophomore forward Megan Blackwell notched a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Sophomore guard/forward Ashlie Washington had nine points and freshman point guard Amber Wharton contributed eight points, five assists and three steals.
Irvine Valley shot just 31.5 percent from the field (17 of 54) for the game.
But the Lasers out-rebounded Orange Coast, 42-32, and had seven less turnovers.
The Lasers play again on Friday, taking on Riverside at Cal Baptist University at 6:30 p.m.
