Amber WhartonThe Irvine Valley women's basketball team felt it let one get away the first time it took on Saddleback in Orange Empire Conference play.

The Lasers fell, 63-59, at home. Last Friday night at Saddleback was different story.

Irvine Valley led nearly the entire game on its way to a 63-50 victory. The win was part of two for the night for the Lasers as the men's team also downed Saddleback to earn the President's Cup trophy for Irvine Valley.

The President's Cup is a friendly competition between the two school's presidents on who has the superior basketball program for the year.

The teams split four conference games, but Irvine Valley won the Cup for the second year in a row based on point differential.

Irvine Valley's women's team built a seven point lead in the first half and took a 30-24 advantage into halftime.

The Lasers then increased that lead to 12 points at 38-26 on a three-pointer by sophomore forward Melanie Kashanchi and then one free throw by freshman forward Shomari McCorkle early in the second half.

Saddleback started to make a run at the lead midway through the second half, getting within six points with 8:14 to go. But then the Gauchos didn't score a field goal for over five minutes and the Lasers built the lead back up to 13 points and cruised to the victory.

IVC out-scored Saddleback, 7-2, to end the contest. Irvine Valley took advantage of Saddleback’s miscues with 10 steals and freshman guard Amber Wharton tossed in 25 points to lead the Lasers (15-11, 6-2).

McCorkle added 13 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals, sophomore forward Megan Blackwell added 10 points and six rebounds and Kashanchi had nine points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Irvine Valley also took advantage at the foul line, making over 86 percent of their charity shots (19 of 22).

With the win, Irvine Valley stayed in a virtual tie with Fullerton for second place in conference. Cypress defeated Fullerton last Friday, 54-52, to move to 8-1 in conference. Fullerton fell to 7-2.

Irvine Valley plays at Orange Coast this Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The Lasers are at Riverside at Cal Baptist University on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
