Lasers nearly pull off the upset at Saddleback

2011-loria.jpgIrvine Valley's women's tennis team came up just short against Saddleback again. Saddleback defeated Irvine Valley for the second straight time, 5-4, in an Orange Empire Conference match at Saddleback on Thursday. The win wrapped up the conference title for the Gauchos, who improved their record to 11-0 overall and 9-0 in conference. It was the 29th straight win for Saddleback, which is the defending state champion, dating back to the 2010 season. Thursday's match was close all the way through and only won by Saddleback with a final victory at No. 3 doubles. Keyt O’Neil and Lauren Fetter pulled out an 8-3 win over Irvine Valley's Ann Pham and Mackenzie Shutler. Irvine Valley, which saw its record slip to 9-5 overall and 6-3 in conference, won two of three doubles prosets, but it wasn't enough. IVC trailed, 4-2, after the six singles matches. In singles, IVC sophomore Tina Vuong earned a big 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over Avriel Tomaiko at the No. 1 position. And sophomore Natalie Loria won, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 singles for the Lasers, but IVC dropped the rest of the singles matches in straight sets. In doubles, Irvine Valley got wins from the teams of Loria and Vuong and freshman Megan Miller and sophomore Katie Billings. Irvine Valley, which went into the match tied for second in the conference standings with Riverside, finishes the regular season next Tuesday hosting Orange Coast at 2 p.m.
