Why take philosophy? Students have suggested various interesting reasons to me over the years. Let me give two important reasons here.
1. The history of philosophy is the history of ideas themselves. From a study of philosophy we can understand why we think about, categorize, and value things (and other people) in the ways that we do. Since the way we think about and value things essentially defines who we are (as individuals, as cultures), an introduction to philosophy is in a very real sense an introduction to yourself. As Nietzsche put it: "we are unknown to ourselves." Philosophy can help us get to know who and what we really are.
2. Philosophy, by requiring sustained thought about fundamental issues, helps us practice critical thinking. And becoming a better thinker just cannot be bad for you!
If you keep these things in mind as you take this course, you should find it interesting and fun. After all, there is a lot to think about!
