ELEVATE AAPI@IVC:

Meet Our Team

Edwin Tiongson

Project Director

As a first-generation Filipino-American student educated in the California Community College system, I understand the trials and tribulations of navigating higher education. I transferred to the University of the Pacific to earn a bachelor’s degree in communication then went to California State University, Northridge for my master’s degree in communication studies. Currently, I am pursing a doctoral degree in education at California State University, Fullerton. I have been teaching and coaching speech and debate at Irvine Valley College since 2002 and have a unique vantage point to understanding today’s student.

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) are often viewed as the “model minority” and overlooked as an underrepresented group. Like others, these students need services, resources, tutoring, counseling, financial guidance and assistance. While the AANAPISI grant targets such students, the ELEVATE program is intended to serve all students. Great things are happening at IVC and ELEVATE is but one of many support mechanisms for growth and systemic improvements to the quality of our institution.
