What is Alternate Media?
Alternate media refers to course materials produced in a specialized format intended for use by students with disabilities. This may include but is not limited to the following:
- Kurzweil 3000
- Audio files (MP3 and WAV)
- Electronic text (E-Text)
- Large print
- Braille
- Video with closed or open caption

Procedure for Alternate Media Service
- Be enrolled at Irvine Valley College
- Have a verified disability
- Registered with the Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSP&S)
- Meet with your DSP&S Counselor to determine eligibility for alternate media service.
- Discuss alternate media options with DSP&S Counselor to determine the specific alternate media format needed based upon your disability and personal preference.
- Referral from DSP&S Counselor required for alternate media service.
- Submit your request for alternate media service at least fifteen (15) school days in advance to ensure timely delivery of your course materials. Late requests will be placed in a queue and in the order received. Receipt of your materials will be delayed.
- Own the material (textbooks) or have the material purchased on your behalf.
- Be aware that textbooks will need to be cut for scanning purposes when converting to an alternate format and will be spiral bounded by DSP&S when returned to you.
- Do not reproduced or distribute the alternate media material in any other format. Misuse of the material which violates the copyright law will result in disciplinary action.
- Request for alternate media is for college classroom use and not for personal use.
- Training is provided in the use of specialized software (Kurzweil 3000) to access the materials in alternate format.

Request for Alternate Media on Test Accommodations
- Inform your instructor as soon as possible in advance of your need to have your test/quiz converted into an alternate format based upon your disability.
- Remind your instructor to deliver the test/quiz to DSP&S and the Alternate Media Specialist to ensure timely delivery of your converted test materials.
- Secure approval from your instructor on the test date and time.
- Schedule your test date and time five (5) school days in advance with your DSP&S Specialist for test accommodations.
