What is Alternate Media?
Alternate media refers to course materials produced in a specialized format intended for use by students with disabilities. This may include but is not limited to the following:
Kurzweil 3000
Audio files (MP3 and WAV)
Electronic text (E-Text)
Large print
Braille
Video with closed or open caption
Procedure for Alternate Media Service
Be enrolled at Irvine Valley College
Have a verified disability
Registered with the Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSP&S)
Meet with your DSP&S Counselor to determine eligibility for alternate media service.
Discuss alternate media options with DSP&S Counselor to determine the specific alternate media format needed based upon your disability and personal preference.
Referral from DSP&S Counselor required for alternate media service.
Submit your request for alternate media service at least fifteen (15) school days in advance to ensure timely delivery of your course materials. Late requests will be placed in a queue and in the order received. Receipt of your materials will be delayed.
Own the material (textbooks) or have the material purchased on your behalf.
Be aware that textbooks will need to be cut for scanning purposes when converting to an alternate format and will be spiral bounded by DSP&S when returned to you.
Do not reproduced or distribute the alternate media material in any other format. Misuse of the material which violates the copyright law will result in disciplinary action.
Request for alternate media is for college classroom use and not for personal use.
Training is provided in the use of specialized software (Kurzweil 3000) to access the materials in alternate format.
Request for Alternate Media on Test Accommodations
Inform your instructor as soon as possible in advance of your need to have your test/quiz converted into an alternate format based upon your disability.
Remind your instructor to deliver the test/quiz to DSP&S and the Alternate Media Specialist to ensure timely delivery of your converted test materials.
Secure approval from your instructor on the test date and time.
Schedule your test date and time five (5) school days in advance with your DSP&S Specialist for test accommodations.
