GENERAL FAQS FOR STUDENTS

Is the campus entirely shut down?

Aside from the presence of a few essential employees who are onsite to maintain college operations, the campus is closed; however, while the campus is closed, classes are still taking place online.

Are all classes online?

Yes. IVC has moved all classes online beginning March 23 with an anticipation for the remainder of the semester.

Have college events like Commencement, performances, and sports been canceled?

Unfortunately, all events through May 1 have been canceled, including Commencement. All athletics and performing arts events have also been canceled, along with all spring sports. As we are no longer allowing visitors on campus, all events for the public are canceled. Some workshops may be offered online. Check the IVC calendar for the latest updates.

What about Emeritus Institute classes?

IVC’s Emeritus Institute has suspended classes under further notice.

What about student support services?

A wide range of student support services will continue to be offered online, including the Counseling Center, Career Center, Tutoring Center, etc. Please check this list and then visit specific department web pages for hours of operation, instructions for online help, etc

Are laptops or internet hotspots available for students to borrow?

How do I get free or reduced-cost internet access?

Many service providers are providing internet access free of charge or at a reduced rate. You can learn more here.

What other kinds of help are available to students?

Is the Health and Wellness Center closed?

Although the entire IVC campus is closed to the public, the Health and Wellness Center is offering services including online telemedicine and referrals. Please call the Ask-a-Nurse Hotline at 949-451-5687 for assistance.

Is the bookstore closed?

The bookstore is closed, but the website remains open and is offering free ground shipping to avoid disruption. The bookstore wants to make sure that students have access to textbooks and other essential items. Please check https://www.bkstr.com/irvinevalleystore/home for more information.

The bookstore also is offering up to seven free ebooks for students through its partner, RedShelf, through May 25 here.

Students who receive financial aid will be able to order books online. At the payment screen, select financial aid or scholarship as the payment method, and enter your student ID number. Applicable scholarship or financial aid will populate for you to select.

Are library services available online?

Yes! Many research tools are available through the library website 24/7, and many of the library's other services are available online during their normal business hours. The library will continue to offer workshops throughout the semester, and librarians can assist you online with your needs. Visit ivc.edu/library for more information.

What should I do about books I checked out from the library?

If you checked out any materials from the library before the campus closed, please note that the return deadline has been extended to May 20.

I am not receiving coronavirus updates from IVC on my email. How do I subscribe?

We send our communications directly to your student email (@ivc.edu). Check your junk/spam and trash folders and make sure to add ivcinfo@ivc.edu to your trusted sender list to ensure you will receive our emails in your inbox. If you are still not receiving our emails, you may have unsubscribed. To resolve this, find the most recent “This Week at IVC” email that you received and click on “Manage Preferences” at the very bottom of the email. Complete the form and submit it. You will receive a confirmation email once you have submitted the form. It is important to click on the link in the confirmation email to complete the re-subscription. You can sign up at bit.ly/IVCUpdate.

Am I eligible for a partial or full refund on my parking permit due to the campus closure caused by the Coronavirus outbreak?

All fees, including parking fees, and refund processes are established by the Board of Trustees of South Orange County Community College District in accordance with state laws and regulations. As such, students are eligible for a parking permit refund for two reasons: a) their classes are canceled due to insufficient enrollment; or b) the student officially withdraws from all of their on-campus classes prior to the refund-eligible drop deadline.

Students who were enrolled in sixteen-week or first eight-week courses are not eligible for a parking fee refund given the time that has passed since the beginning of spring 2020 semester.

If a student has enrolled in a second eight-week course(s) only, they would normally have until Friday, April 3, 2020, to request a refund. In light of the fact that all classes and services have moved online and to allow more time for students to submit their requests, we have extended the deadline to request a refund to Friday, April 10, 2020. Please email your request for a parking fee refund to ivcpolice@ivc.edu. Upon approval of the request, you will receive a notification and instructions on mailing your parking permit to IVC Police Department. As soon as the permit is received, a corresponding refund will be processed.

ACADEMIC FAQS FOR STUDENTS

How will the college communicate with me during the closure?

Along with your professors, who will communicate with you frequently regarding your classes, the college will continue to use email as our primary means of direct communication. While we understand that texting may be preferred by many of our students, cellular networks across the globe are taxed in the face of the rapidly evolving situation we are currently facing, and IVC has a large international student population. As such, texting services may not always be dependable, and email remains the most reliable way of communicating with you.

In the coming days and weeks during our closure, please refer to the website for the most current information on college operations. We know you have many questions, and we are committed to ensuring we keep you informed while minimizing any confusion while you focus on your studies. When significant updates are available, we will notify you by email.

How do I access my classes online?

Online learning may be conducted through Canvas, Zoom, or email (your instructor will let you know the specifics; be sure to check your IVC email). If you or someone you know has questions or concerns about technology or with accessing your class online, visit Technology Services at tech.ivc.edu. You can also call the Canvas support line at 1-844-600-4954.

How will I continue to take classes for the remainder of the semester?

You will continue your classes in the Canvas learning management system. You will also submit your assignments and communicate with your instructor in Canvas. If you need assistance, we are offering student support services that include counselors, librarians, learning disability specialists, and staff members who are using their collective talent and resources to quickly and successfully get critical services like counseling, library, and DSPS to you remotely. Please take advantage of these remote support services. If you or someone you know has questions or concerns about technology or with accessing your class online, visit Technology Services at tech.ivc.edu. Do I need to log in to Canvas the same time as my class meets?

You may need to be in not need to be in Canvas during the same times and days as your on-campus class meetings, depending on how your instructor has organized the class online. Check with your instructor and review your Canvas course page for specific information about each of your classes. Your attendance in the remote classroom is based on participating in assigned activities and completing your assignments by their due dates. We do recommend that you log in to your course in Canvas at least once a day, if possible, to check for announcements or updates from your instructor. We recommend you regularly check the announcements and messages areas from your instructor and double check all due dates, as these may be different than what appears in the Canvas calendar. Canvas communications are as important as those sent to your college email address.

Who should I contact if I am an international student?

For general questions, academic counseling appointments, or appointments with our international student advisors, please call the International Student Program at 949-451-5414 or email´┐Żiso@ivc.edu. ?Calls and emails will be returned within 24 hours during regular business hours, which are from 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday. Who should I contact if I have questions about my class?

If you have questions about your class and how to participate in it using Canvas, please contact your instructor, who can provide this information. Your instructor’s contact information can be found on your course syllabus.

If you need help learning how to use Canvas, log into Canvas for tutorials you can watch for assistance. If you or someone you know has questions or concerns about technology, or with accessing your class online, visit Technology Services at tech.ivc.edu. My professor is not responding to me. What can I do?

Please email the appropriate department chair or dean to see what options you have. They will try to respond back to you within one to two business days to assist you.

What should I do if I have a Title IX-related issue or question?

In response to COVID-19, the Title IX staff has transitioned to telecommuting services and are working remotely. They will be checking emails during their normal business hours (8 am to 5 pm Monday through Frida) and will do their best to respond to all phone calls as soon as possible. For the fastest response time, the team recommends emailing achua4@ivc.edu.

How will I receive my degree or certificate?

Irvine Valley College has started an automatic degree/certificate awarding process. If you qualify for one or more degrees and/or certificates, you may receive a notification that you are being awarded with them. No application is necessary! You could be eligible for degrees or certificates in your primary program of study and/or additional programs that you qualify for.

>However, to ensure that the degree or certificate is awarded and posted, students are encouraged to apply through MySite for conferral during their final semester. Official transcripts for any prior work must be on file at the time you apply for your degree or certificate for the coursework to be considered.

Please note that this process does not take into account courses taken outside of the district or in-progress courses being taken in the current semester. For these cases, you will need to submit necessary transcripts to Admissions and Records and manually apply for the relevant degrees and certificates.

Can I withdraw from IVC due to COVID-19 without receiving a Withdrawal (W) grade?

Students withdrawing due to the COVID-19 pandemic will receive an Excused Withdrawal (EW). Please see the Excused Withdrawal Process under Admissions and Records for more information and deadline.

What is the deadline to request a Pass/No Pass (P/NP) grading option?

In response to the circumstances surrounding COVID-19, IVC is extending the deadline for requesting a Pass/No Pass (P/NP) grading option until June 8, 2020 for the spring semester. Visit the P/NP website under Admissions and Records for more information

HEALTH RELATED COVID-19 FAQ

When should I call my doctor about COVID-19?

If you think you have been exposed to COVID-19 and develop a fever and symptoms, such as cough or difficulty breathing, call your healthcare provider for medical advice.

If I have insurance should I call my primary care doctor's office first?

Yes. Please call your primary care physician's office. If your primary care physician is not available, please call one of your local urgent care locations. Do not go directly to Urgent Care. To protect patients, staff, and the community, they are screening and advising all patients by phone.

Where can I go to get tested for COVID-19?

Guidelines on COVID-19 testing is evolving rapidly. Currently, the Public Health Department is the only agency that has testing materials. You can call the Orange County Health Care Agency(OCHCA) Referral Line at 800-564-8448, or go in person to the OCHCA located at 1725 W. 17th Street in Santa Ana. They are currently open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.

What if I feel like I need emergency care?

If you decide that you need emergency care, you will be screened when you enter the Emergency Room. If you have respiratory symptoms, you will be given a mask to wear. If you have respiratory symptoms and meet the screening criteria for COVID-19, you will be given a mask and asked to wait outside of the waiting room. A nurse will come out to you and escort you to a patient room.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Fever and respiratory symptoms, including a cough and difficulty breathing. These can also be the symptoms of other common illnesses circulating in the community.

How can I help protect myself and my family?

There is currently no vaccine for COVID-19. The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to the virus. US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends everyday preventive actions such as:

  1. Stay home. Do not leave except to get medical care. Do not visit public areas. Avoid using public transportation,ride-sharing, or taxis.
  2. Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, make sure to focus on your fingertips as these are the areas are most likely to come in contact with bacteria/viruses. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  4. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  5. Stay at least 6 feet away from others at all times.
  6. Stay home and do not travel when you are sick.
  7. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze then throw the tissue in the trash. Then wash your hands with soap and water.
  8. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
