Women's volleyball team breezes past Saddleback
Nov 04, 2009 The Irvine Valley women’s volleyball team got back to its winning ways Wednesday night, sweeping Saddleback in three easy games, 25-12, 25-18, 25-18.
The win improved Irvine Valley’s record to 12-2 overall and 8-2 in conference.
The match was part of the Battle of the Irons competition between the two schools – points are built up based on wins in contests against the rival college.
A scoring
system of 30 points per sport has been derived for each of the sports
where the two colleges meet, and a trophy bearing the branding
irons of the ranches where these two schools sit will be presented to
the winning school after the spring sports schedules have concluded.
The 15 points Irvine Valley earned with the win in volleyball puts the Lasers in the lead for the fall sports with 52.5 points (30 for women's basketball and 22.5 for women's soccer). Saddleback has 37.5 points (30 for women's golf and 7.5 for women's soccer). Katie Wilkerson led the way for Irvine Valley with 13 kills on Wednesday night. It was the fourth match in a row she led the team and eighth-time this season.
Caitlin Segert and Sarah Atilano added nine kills apiece. Atilano, normally a defensive specialist, got a chance to line up as an outside hitter and made the most of it.
Nichole May paced the squad with 10 digs and Segert and Allie Hammer each had three blocks. Hammer ran the offense with 38 assists.
Saddleback was paced by Melissa Chavez with seven kills, Rachel Talafus with 14 digs and Janelle Schneider and Morgan Kavanaugh with four blocks each.
The Lasers were coming off just their second loss of the season, falling last Friday at Fullerton in five games.
The defeat dropped Irvine Valley from sixth to 11th in this week’s state rankings.
IVC could move back up with wins in its next two contests. The Lasers have two tough ones - at Cypress on Friday and home against Orange Coast next Wednesday.
IVC went into Wednesday night’s contest with Saddleback in a tie for second place in conference with Cypress - one game behind first-place Orange Coast.
