Women's volleyball team opens conference on Friday

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team finally gets back in action this Friday when it hosts Riverside at 6 p.m. in the first Orange Empire Conference match of the season.
It is also a special night for another reason.
The Irvine Valley athletic department will be hosting a special event in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The Dig Pink Volleyball Project for Breat Cancer Awareness will include free T-shirts to fans in attendance, a raffle and an auction will be part of the evenings fundraising. Admission to the match is $5.
Plese join Irvine Valley that evening in support of finding a cure. All proceeds will be donated to breat cancer research.
Doors open at 5 p.m. for the match.
Riverside swept a doubleheader last week, beating San Bernardino Valley, 25-11, 25-14, 25-18, and College of the Desert, 25-15, 25-22, 25-15.
The wins improved Riverside’s record to 7-2 overall.
Freshman Amanda Vialpando continued to put up big numbers for Riverside.
The former CIF Player of the Year, Vialpando recorded 19 kills against San Bernardino and then had 14 against College of the Desert.
Irvine Valley, which is ranked fifth in the state, hasn’t played a match in two weeks.
The Lasers’ last scheduled contest, against sixth-ranked Moorpark last Wednesday, was canceled because of the fires that affected the Moorpark area.
Irvine Valley swept San Diego City on Sept. 18. Ellie Wiekamp finished with 11 kills and seven digs. She also hit .435 in the match.
Hillary Crone ended with 10 kills and hit .444. In all, 10 Laser players recorded at least one kill.
Nichole May added 10 digs and setter Allie Hammer ran the offense with 33 assists. IVC hit .456 as a team in the contest.
Katie Wilkerson leads Irvine Valley on the season, averaging 3.91 kills per game. Wiekamp is averaging 3.73 kills and Crone is averaging 3.08 kills. Crone is also hitting a team best .421.
May paces the team in digs at 3.38, Caitlin Segert is averaging 1.27 blocks and Hammer is averaging 11.62 assists per game.
