Women's volleyball team sweeps Mesa

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team showed just why it is one of the top-ranked teams in the state.
The fifth-ranked Lasers improved their record to 3-0 with their second sweep of the young season.
Irvine Valley beat San Diego Mesa, 25-20, 25-17, 25-16, in a nonconference match at home Wednesday night.
The Lasers held off San Diego Mesa in the first game, getting a tip winner from freshman Hillary Crone and then a kill off the block from freshman Ellie Wiekamp to close out the game.
The Lasers cruised in the next two games and wrapped up the match in under an hour and a half.
San Diego Mesa's record slipped to 3-2 overall.
"We played well and can still play better, which is encouraging," IVC Coach Tom Pestolesi said. "We just need to eliminate a few unforced errors."
Irvine Valley was led by sophomore Katie Wilkerson, who had 14 kills, nine digs and five aces.
"She did a really nice job of serving and passing for us," Pestolesi said.
Crone added eight kills, sophomore Caitlin Segert had six kills and four blocks, sophomore Nichole May finished with 12 digs and sophomore Allie Hammer had 34 assists and five digs.
"Allie set a real nice match," Pestolesi said. "She made good choices and set the middle at the right times. She really spread the ball around, got everyone involved and stayed with the game plan."
Irvine Valley plays another San Diego area school on Friday. The Lasers travel to San Diego City for a nonconference match at 5 p.m.
