The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team opened what it hopes is a very successful 2009 season with an impressive performance Wednesday night on the road at College of the Canyons.
Irvine Valley swept Canyons, 25-21, 25-17, 25-21, in the non-conference match.
The Lasers had their way with the Cougars for most of the match. IVC did have to rally back from a 11-3 deficit to win the second game.
Irvine Valley had three players with at least 10 kills in the contest. Freshman outside hitter Ellie Wiekamp led the way with 16 kills. She also added six digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Katie Wilkerson and freshman opposite Hillary Crane both finished with 10 kills. Freshman middle blocker Sasha Kornilova chipped in four kills and three aces.
Sophomore middle blocker Caitlin Segert ended with a team-high four block assists. Sophomore libero Nichole May, a returning first team all-Orange Empire Conference player, had 10 digs and sophomore defensive specialist Alyssa Swatek contributed six digs.
Sophomore setter Allie Hammer, another first team all-conference player last season, finished with 38 assists and five digs.
Irvine Valley doesn't play again until Friday, Sept. 11. The Lasers will take on defending Pacific Coast Conference champion Palomar in their home opener at 5 p.m.
Irvine Valley is coming off a 2008 campain in which it won the Orange Empire Conference title for the second year in a row, reached the state tournament and finished with a 18-7 overall record.
