Volleyball player Mari Guadagnini named OEC MVP
Dec 10, 2008

Irvine Valley College sophomore outside hitter Marilena Guadagnini was named as the Orange Empire Conference women's volleyball most valuable player for the 2008 season in recent voting by the conference coaches.

Guadagnini averaged 3.1 kills per game in leading the Lasers to a 12-2 record and its second straight conference title. She is the second consecutive Laser to earn MVP honors as Chelsea Pavlik earned the conference’s top honor last year.

Joining Guadagnini on the first-team all-conference list are Irvine Valley freshmen teammates Nichole May (outside hitter) and Allie Hammer (setter).

Fullerton and Orange Coast also had three players make the first-team list. Setter Ally Rios, middle blocker Leah Haproff and libero Brooke Raynor were voted in from Fullerton while setter Emily Lyon, middle blocker Briana Fields, and libero Amanda Cheseborough were selected from Orange Coast.

Middle blocker Brittney Rush and setter Janet Ugaitafa from Riverside both made the first-team as well as outside hitters Marina Samoa and Brianna Kelly from Cypress.

Earning second-team all-conference honors were Irvine Valley freshmen opposite Casey Williams and libero Amanda Donaldson, Jade Esquivel and Reilly Stevens from Fullerton, Rachel Freeno and Christina Richards from Orange Coast, Stephanie Kussman and Katie Saavedra from Cypress, Chelsea Rashoff of Golden West, Brittany Whitlock from Riverside, Rachel Talafus from Saddleback and Andrea Gallardo of Santa Ana.

Saddleback’s Ashleigh Cottrell and Orange Coast’s Karlee Skalla were both added to the honorable mention list.

Fullerton's Eddie Rapp was selected as the conference Coach of the Year. Rapp guided the Hornets to an 11-3 conference record and second place in the conference standings.
