Women's volleyball team on to second round of playoffs
Nov 25, 2008
It was home sweet home again for the Irvine Valley women’s volleyball team.
The Lasers completed an undefeated home season and moved into the second round of the Southern California Regional playoffs with a straight-game, 25-12, 25-19, 25-21 win over Canyons at home Tuesday night.
IVC went 11-0 at home this year.
"It was great for the sophomores to win in the playoffs at home like that," IVC coach Tom Pestolesi said.
The Lasers, who are seeded fifth, move on to play Orange Empire Conference rival and No. 13 seed Cypress, which upset No. 4 Moorpark in four games. The match will be at Cypress on Saturday night at 6 p.m.
The win Tuesday night was also Irvine Valley’s 10th in its last 11 matches.
Irvine Valley, which is ranked eighth in the state, improved its record to 17-5 overall.
"We played just well enough tonight," Pestolesi said. "The important thing is to advance. That was our goal. It is all about getting through the first round and then seeing what we can do in the second round."
The Lasers cruised in game one. They scored the final four points of the game, including getting the game-winner on a kill by freshman outside hitter Casey Williams.
The Lasers kept it going early in the second game, scoring the first four points. Two of the points came on kills by freshman Nichole May.
It was close the rest of the way. The Lasers didn’t lead by more than five points until they scored four in a row to go up, 24-18. Two points later, sophomore outside hitter Mari Guadagnini came through with a kill to end the game.
Canyons went ahead, 3-2, in the third game, but the Lasers scored three straight to take the lead and they never looked back. Up, 10-8, IVC put a five-point run together behind freshman setter Allie Hammer’s serve.
Hammer had two aces and Williams had two kills during the run.
Irvine Valley led by as many as nine points in the game before Canyons rallied late. The Cougars pulled to within 23-20. But IVC reached game point on a Canyons service error.
And then two points later, May put down a kill to finish off the win.
The Lasers were led by freshman middle blocker Kelsey Hall, who had a season-high 13 kills. She hit .867 on the night.
"Kelsey was unbelievable," Pestolesi said. "It was a record for hitting percentage in a match. She was on fire."
Williams added 10 kills and May had nine kills and a team-high eight digs. Hammer finished with 38 assists and three aces.
