Women's volleyball team earns fifth seed for playoffs
Nov 24, 2008 The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team is the fifth seed for the Southern California Regional Playoffs.
The Lasers will take on 12th-seeded College of the Canyons in a first-round match Tuesday night at Irvine Valley at 7 p.m.
Canyons enters with a record of 17-9 overall. The Cougars tied for second in the Western State Conference with Bakersfield with a mark of 9-3. Canyons lost its final two matches of the regular season losing to both Bakersfield and conference champion Pierce in three games. It had won four in a row prior to the two defeats.
The Cougars are led by Caitlin Ramirez, who is averaging 2.75 kills and 2.33 digs per game and Lauren Wells, who averages 2.59 kills and 2.85 digs per game.
Irvine Valley has a record of 16-5 overall. It won its second straight Orange Empire Conference title with a record of 12-2. IVC finished the regular season with two straight victories and won nine of its final 10 matches. It was ranked eighth in the state in the final poll of the regular season.
The Lasers are paced by freshman Casey Williams, who is averaging 3.09 kills per game and Mari Guadagnini, who is averaging 2.79 kills and 1.76 digs per game. Nichole May averages 2.81 digs, Amanda Donaldson averages 2.68 digs and Allie Hammer is averaging 9.44 assists per game.
Irvine Valley defeated Canyons in four games, 17-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-17, in its third match of the season on Sept. 5. Mari Guadagnini led Irvine Valley with 15 kills, Carly Loucks ended with 10 kills, Nichole May had 13 digs and Allie Hammer contributed 35 assists.
The two teams also met last year in the playoffs at IVC. Canyons snapped Irvine Valley's 22-match win streak, upsetting the Lasers, who were ranked No. 1 in the state at the time in five games in the playoff regional final. Canyons moved on to the state tournament.
