Women's volleyball team moves up in the rankings

Thanks to a 3-0 mark in Orange Empire Conference play and wins over two highly ranked teams, the Irvine Valley women's volleyball team moved up in the latest state poll.
The poll, which was released on Monday, has the Lasers now at No. 9. Irvine Valley was No. 17 in the last poll.
Los Angeles Pierce sits atop the poll and is followed by El Camino, Santa Rosa, Sacramento City, Palomar, Golden West, Moorpark and San Diego Mesa. IVC is at No. 9 and Cypress rounds out the top 10.
The Lasers have a record of 7-3 overall. They defeated Cypress in five games at home last Wednesday and then defeated Riverside on the road in three straight games on Friday.
In IVC's 25-16, 25-17, 25-21 victory last Friday, freshman Casey Williams and sophomore Mari Guadagnini led the way. Each finished with 12 kills.
Williams also added five blocks.
Sophomore Amanda Donaldson paced the team in digs with seven and freshman setter Allie Hammer finished with 33 assists.
IVC hit .361 as a team, let by Guadagnini's .426 clip (12-3-21). Williams hit .375 and freshman Nichole May hit .400 with five kills and just one error in 10 attempts.
The Lasers also had 11 aces in the match. Freshman Alyssa Swatek finished with four aces and Donaldson and sophomore Camryn Torromeo had three aces each.
Irvine Valley plays again on Wednesday in a conference match at Orange Coast. The Pirates, who are tied for second in conference with Cypress and Golden West with records of 2-1, have an overall record of 10-1. They are ranked 12th in the state.
The Lasers then host 18th ranked Fullerton on Friday at 6 p.m.
