The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team opened Orange Empire Conference play with a bang Friday night at Golden West.
The Lasers, ranked 17th in the latest state poll, beat third-ranked Golden West in four games (23-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-20).
The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 5-3 overall.
The Lasers were led by sophomore outside hitter Marilena Guadagnini, who finished with a season-high 17 kills. Guadagnini, who hit .448 on the night, also contributed eight digs.
Freshmen opposite Casey Williams and freshman middle blocker Caitlin Segert added nine kills apiece. Segert had her nine kills in just 11 attempts and hit .727 for the match.
Freshman Nichole May had a solid all-around match for the Lasers with seven kills and a team-high 13 digs. Sophomore Amanda Donaldson finished with 11 digs.
Also for the Lasers, freshman middle blocker Carly Loucks had a team-best four blocks and sophomore Camryn Torromeo chipped in four aces.
Freshman setter Allie Hammer guided the offense with 41 assists. The Lasers hit .345 as a team in the win.
Irvine Valley plays again on Wednesday, hosting Cypress in a conference match at 6 p.m.
