Women's volleyball team sweeps Victor Valley in opener
Aug 27, 2008
It wasn’t a picture perfect opening for the Irvine Valley women’s volleyball team.
The Lasers struggled at times before pulling out a straight -game win over Victor Valley, 25-23, 25-14, 27-25, at home Wednesday night.
"It was a nice way to begin the season in front of the home crowd, but we still have a lot of work to do," IVC Coach Tom Pestolesi said.
Victor Valley gave Irvine Valley all it could handle in the first and third games.
The second game was even close for a while. Victor Valley led the second frame, 12-11, before the Lasers went on a 10-0 run to take control. Freshman outside hitter Casey Williams’ kill gave the Lasers a 21-12 lead. IVC took a 2-0 lead in games after a hitting error by Victor Valley.
The Lasers trailed late in the third game before turning things around. Down game point at 24-22, the Lasers pulled within a point on a Victor Valley net call.
IVC tied it at 24-24 on a big block by freshman middle blocker Kelsey Hall.
Sophomore all-Orange Empire Conference player Camryn Torromeo then came through with a kill to give IVC match point at 25-24.
Victor Valley tied it up at 25-25, but the Lasers won the match two points later.
Back-to-back kills by Hall and Williams gave IVC its first win of the year.
"Overall, we got a lot of nice contributions," Pestolesi said. "I thought Casey Williams was great. She had 16 kills and hit over .400. Kelsey Hall came on and did a real nice job. Allie Hammer set a nice match and Alyssa Swatek made some big plays defensively in that third game."
Williams led the way with 16 kills. Sophomore Marilena Guadagnini added 11 kills and Hall had five kills. Sophomore Amanda Donaldson led in digs with 10. Swatek contributed eight digs and Hammer ended with 35 assists and six digs.
Irvine Valley plays again next Wednesday at San Diego Mesa at 5 p.m.
