Volleyball players Chelsea Pavlik and Peter Johnson named IVC's Scholar Athletes of the Year
May 14, 2008
Volleyball players Chelsea Pavlik and Peter Johnson were named Irvine Valley College's Scholar Athletes of the Year on Tuesday at a luncheon put on by the Exchange Club of Irvine.
It was the ninth year that the Exchange Club has honored IVC's scholar athletes.
Pavlik, a sophomore, was an outside hitter for the women's volleyball team.
She made some kind of impact in her first and only season with the Lasers.
She led the team to its best ever record, was named the Orange Empire Conference most valuable player and all-state and became the program's first ever first team All-American.
Pavlik starred at Mater Dei High and then attended Regis University in Denver, Colo. last year. She was named conference freshman of the year and first team all-conference at Regis after averaging 4.51 kills per game.
She was even better this year at IVC. Pavlik recorded 412 kills during the regular season and averaged 5.8 kills per game in Orange Empire Conference competition to lead the Lasers to a 14-0 conference record and conference title.
Pavlik went on to break the school record for kills in a season with 463. She averaged 5.86 kills per game and also averaged 3.57 digs and .67 aces per game. She led the team in both digs and aces.
Pavlik also hit an impressive .342 on the season. She led the team in kills in all 23 matches this past season and recorded 20 or more kills in 10 of those contests. She reached 30 kills in two matches with her best being a 32-kill performance against in a four-game win over Golden West. The 32 kills was the most ever in a match by an IVC player.
Pavlik's performance helped Irvine Valley finish the season with a record of 22-1 overall. The Lasers were ranked No. 1 in the state for half of the season. They dropped their first game in the Southern California Regional final, one step away from the state championships, losing to College of the Canyons in five games.
Pavlik has also stood out in the classroom at Irvine Valley with a solid 3.0 grade point average. She will attend UC Santa Barbara on a volleyball scholarship in the fall.
"Chelsea is without a doubt, the best female player we've had at IVC," Coach Tom Pestolesi said. "Her competitivness, court sense and the ability to turn it on when games were tight are unmatched. She is the first 1st team All-American in program history. "But the best part, is that she is a great teammate and person and was very fun to coach. She is always happy, sometimes a little silly, but got along with everyone all the time."
Johnson has been on the Irvine Valley men's volleyball team the past two seasons.
And what a two seasons they have been thanks to his efforts - a 34-5 record and back-to-back state championships.
Johnson has been the best player on the squad, the best player in the Pacific Coast Conference and one of the top players in the state during that time.
The sophomore outside hitter was named Pacific Coast Conference player of the year two seasons in a row as IVC wn won the conference title both years and was selected MVP of the state tournament this year.
He is the only two-time conference player of the year in IVC program history. He finished his career with 622 kills, which also ranks among the best in program history. His 355 kills as a freshman in 2007 is third best on the school's all-time list.
Johnson amassed 257 kills this season on what was a much more balanced squad. He averaged 4.21 kills per game along with averaging 1.33 digs, .64 blocks and .38 aces per game. Johnson also hit .408 on the year, which ranks fifth best in program history for a season.
He led this year's team in kills in nine of 20 matches. But he was at his best at the end of the season when he paced the team in kills in its final three contests, including the state final when he had 22 kills.
In IVC's straight-game victory over Orange Coast to win the state title, Johnson had those 22 kills in 31 swings with only two errors for an astounding .645 hitting percentage.
It was quite a state final day for Johnson as he also signed to play at UC San Diego next year.
He has also shined as a student, recording a 3.0 grade point average while at IVC.
"Peter came to IVC with some ability and a great attitude," Pestolesi said. "He developed into one of the top three players to ever wear an IVC uniform. Peter would always come through in the clutch with a dig, block or kill whenever we needed it. "The best part, is that he developed into an excellent student and outstanding leader. He is a great kid from a great family. We are very, very proud of Peter and I am excited to see him play Division I volleyball."
