Women's volleyball team celebrates sophomore night
Nov 10, 2007
The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team had a lot to celebrate Friday night before and after its straight-game (30-19, 30-13, 30-28) victory over Cypress at home.
The Lasers started the night, which was the final regular season home match of the season, honoring sophomore players Brooke Bryant, Kelly Keating, Jessica Flood and Chelsea Pavlik.
Irvine Valley, which had already wrapped up the Orange Empire Conference title with a victory over Saddleback earlier in the week, then went out and recorded its 20th straight win of the season.
The Lasers, who are ranked No. 1 in the state, improved to 20-0 overall and 13-0 in conference play.
The 20 wins broke the school record for most victories in a season. The previous high was 19 by the 1993 team.
Irvine Valley can still add on to that record total this season. The Lasers finish the season with a match at Orange Coast next Wednesday and then will compete in the Southern California Regional Playoffs.
Another program record also fell on Friday night. Pavlik, a sophomore outside hitter, broke the school record for most kills in a season. She went into the match 10 short of Natalie Dittrick's total of 386 set last season.
Pavlik, who played her high school volleyball at Mater Dei and then spent last year at St. Regis University, recorded 19 kills Friday night to move her into the top spot with 395.
Pavlik also had 12 digs and three aces in the win over Cypress.
Freshman outside hitter Mari Guadagnini finished with eight kills, dive digs and three aces, freshman middle blocker Katie Pascoe had four aces, Bryant and freshman outside hitter Camryn Torromeo ended with seven digs and Keating contributed 36 assists for IVC.
Irvine Valley plays at Orange Coast Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
The Lasers are slated to open the playoffs on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at home. The opponent and time have yet to be determined.
