Women's tennis player Natali Cespedes qualifies for regionals

The Irvine Valley women's tennis team began play in the Orange Empire Conference Championships Tuesday at Orange Coast College.
Irvine Valley had a singles player and a doubles win enough matches to qualify for the Southern California Regionals.
Freshman Natali Cespedes had a great day, winning two matches, and moving on to the third round on Thursday. By reaching the quarterfinals, Cespedes qualified for the Southern California Regionals and earned all-conference honors.
Cespedes won her first match in the main draw, defeating Brittany Magliocchi of Fullerton, 6-3, 6-1. She then defeated K.D. Doran of Orange Coast in the second round, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2. Cespedes will meet Kathy Dennis of Saddleback in the quarterfinals on Thursday at Orange Coast.
Maya Morris was one match away from qualifying for the regionals. Morris beat Riverside's Pam Johnson, 6-3, 6-0, in the opening round. She then lost to Saddleback's Ernia Hung, 6-2, 6-2.
Carli Churm defeated Rachel Barber, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, in a play-in round match to get into the main draw on Tuesday. Churm later lost to Jaleh Mazahiri of Orange Coast in the main draw.
In doubles action, Cespedes and Morris defeated a team from Santa Ana, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round to move on. Cespeded and Morris' victory automatically qualified them for regionals.
The doubles match of Irvine Valley players Carlie Churm and Ashley Katnik was suspended on Tuesday because of darkness and will be continued on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
