2/10/2011  Women's tennis team makes it two wins in a rowKatie Billings
The Irvine Valley women's tennis team improved its record to 2-1 on the season with a 7-2 non-conference victory over El Camino on the road on Thursday.
Irvine Valley won all three doubles matches and then captured four of the six singles contests.
In doubles, sophomore Katie Billings and freshman Megan Miller won, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot.
At No. 2 doubles, Tina Vuong and Mackenzie Shutler earned a 6-0, 6-0, victory. And at the No. 3 position, sophomore Anna Pham and freshman Alyssa Pekarcik won, 6-2, 7-6.
Vuong won at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1. Billings came out on top at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0 and Miller won, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3 singles.
IVC's other win in singles came from Pekarcik, who won, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 6 position.
Shutler dropped a tough three-set match for the Lasers at the No. 4 spot.
Irvine Valley plays again on Tuesday, hosting Palomar in a non-conference match.
 
2/8/2011  Women's tennis team earns first victory
After dropping its first match of the season, the Irvine Valley women's tennis team picked up its first  victory.
The Lasers defeated Cerritos, 9-0, on Tuesday in a non-conference match at IVC.
IVC started with three wins in doubles, the first two were easy.
Sophomores Natalie Loria and Tina Vuong won, 8-1, at the No. 1 position. At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Katie Billings and freshman Megan Miller also won, 8-1.
And at No. 3 doubles, freshman Mackenzie Shutler and sophomore Anna Pham came out on top, 8-6.
In singles, Vuong, Billings, Miller, Shutler, freshman Alyssa Pekarcik and freshmana Ivette Winder each earned victories. All were in straight sets. Vuong and Pekarcik each only dropped one game in their wins and Billings and Winder each only lost two games.
Irvine Valley improved its record to 1-1 overall.
Irvine Valley plays again Thursday at El Camino in Torrance.
 
10/1/ 2010  Vuong wins singles title at tourney
IVC sophomore Tina Vuong recently captured the singles title at the out of season Charger Invitational hosted by Cypress. Vuong and IVC partner Natalie Loria also reached the finals in the doubles competition.
Loria and Vuong were two of the top players in the Orange Empire  Conference last season. And Loria was named the conference player of the year.
The IVC women's team is coming off a season in which it finished second in the Orange Empire Conference and reached the playoff semifinals.
 
4/22/2010  Women's tennis team advances to playoffs
The Irvine Valley women's tennis team was rewarded for one of the best seasons in school history.
The Lasers were seeded fourth for the eight-team Southern California Dual Team Playoffs recently and won their opening round playoff match.
Irvine Valley defeated Santa Barbara City, 5-2, in the first round of the playoffs.
IVC won four of six contests in singles and then took the No. 2 doubles set to clinch the win.
The Lasers got singles wins from their top three players to set the tone. No. 1 player and Orange Empire Conference co-MVP Natalie Loria started slow, but came back to win, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
No. 2 player Tina Vuong had an easy time, winning, 6-0, 6-1.
And No. 3 player Luba Sigaty earned a hard-fought 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 victory.
The Lasers got their fourth singles point in the No. 6 spot from Sandi Richards, who won, 6-0, 6-3.
Irvine Valley needed to capture just one of the three doubles contests to wrap up the win and the No. 2 team of Vuong and Billings took care of that with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
Irvine Valley ended up losing to Saddleback in the playoff semifinals, but finished the season with an impressive 11-4 record overall. Irvine Valley tied for second in the Orange Empire Conference with a mark of 5-3.
 
3/30/2010  Lasers dominate Riverside
The Irvine Valley women's tennis team had a solid 6-3 win on the road at Riverside when the two teams met earlier this month.
But IVC was even better this time around against the Tigers.
Irvine Valley dropped just one match in beating Riverside, 8-1, last Tuesday at home.
The Lasers won five of six matches in singles and all three doubles contests.
Two of the doubles matches were close.
IVC's No. 1 team of Natalie Loria and Luba Sigaty, won, 8-7 (7-4), and the No. 3 team of Grace Cho and Sandi Richards won, 8-7 (8-6).
The Lasers had little trouble in the No. 2 doubles match with the team of Katie Billings and Tina Vuong winning, 8-0.
In singles, Loria defeated Nadia Khamis, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 1 position.
At No. 2 singles, Vuong came out on top, 6-2, 6-2, over Brittany Gourlay.
Billings fell in three tough sets at No. 3 singles.
But Sigaty defeated Becca Rosser, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot, Erin kang won, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 at the No. 5 position and Richards earned a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 6 singles.
The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 9-3 overall.
Irvine Valley is currently in a tie for second in the conference standings with Orange Coast.
