2/3/2012  Women's tennis team sweeps San Diego Mesa in 2012 openerMegan Miller
The Irvine Valley women's tennis team got its 2012 season off to a great start. The Lasers didn't drop a match in beating San Diego Mesa, 9-0, in a nonconference match at home on Thursday afternoon. IVC won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Sophomore returner Megan Miller defeated Gabie Fortunato, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Freshman Alyssa Harper beat Chika Yanai, 7-6, 6-2, at the second singles spot. Freshman Corliss Mejia defeated Denise Romero, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3 singles. Sophomore returner Alyssa Pekarcik beat Layla Zbiden, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, at No. 4 singles and sophomore Ivette Winder earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Mariah Albright at the fifth singles spot for the Lasers. San Diego Mesa defaulted at No. 6 singles. Irvine Valley's top doubles team of Miller and Harper won, 8-3, and the No. 2 team of Mejia and Pekarcik had an easy 8-0 victory. IVC picked up a default win at No. 3 doubles. Irvine Valley plays again next Thursday, hosting El Camino at 2 p.m.

7/22/2011  Women's tennis team and players earn ITA All-Academic honors2011 IVC women's tennis team
The 2011 Irvine Valley women's tennis team was recently honored as an ITA All-Academic Team for Junior and Community Colleges by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. IVC was one of just six teams from across the country to garner honors and the only squad from Region 1 (California).  The ITA All-Academic Team is required to have a minimum 3.20 grade point average. The other five colleges were Copiah-Lincoln CC in Mississippi, Cowley College in Kansas, Marion Military Institute in Alabama, Meridian Community College in Mississippi and Seward County Community College in Kansas. In addition, three Irvine Valley student-athletes were picked for ITA Scholar Athlete status for junior and community colleges. They were sophomore Katie Billings, freshman Megan Miller and freshman Ivette Winder. The players helped Irvine Valley finish with a record of 10-5 this past season. The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).          ITA Academic Awards
 
6/20/2011  Tina Vuong named ITA Region I Player of the YearTina Vuong
Irvine Valley sophomore tennis player Tina Vuong was recently named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Region I Player of the Year. There are four regions throughout the country and Region I makes up California. Vuong had quite a season for the Lasers. She was also named the Orange Empire Conference Player of the Year for 2011. Vuong had a singles record of 14-0 during the regular season for the Lasers, going 13-0 at the No. 1 position. She also went 12-1 in doubles during the regular season, including 11-1 with teammate Natalie Loria. Vuong was named all-conference in doubles with Loria. Vuong qualified for the Southern California Regional tournament in singles and made the CCCAA State Championships semifinals in doubles with Loria. It was the farthest players from Irvine Valley had ever reached in the state event. Vuong helped Irvine Valley to a 10-5 record overall and a 7-3 mark in conference this season, which tied with Riverside for second in the final standings. Vuong is the first player from IVC to be named an ITA player of the year. As the governing body of collegiate tennis, the ITA promotes both the athletic and academic achievements of the collegiate tennis community. The ITA, which is comprised of nearly 1,700 men's and women's varsity coaches representing over 1,200 institutions, administers numerous regional and national championships and the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings for over 20,000 college varsity student-athletes at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior College levels. The ITA also has a comprehensive awards program for players and coaches to honor excellence in academics, leadership and sportsmanship.          ITA Award Winners
 
6/16/2011  Irvine Valley duo ranked third in final state doubles rankingsTina Vuong and Natalie Loria
The Irvine Valley doubles team of Tina Vuong and Natalie Loria ended up No. 3 in the final state rankings put out by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association recently. Vuong and Loria were the top doubles team in the Orange Empire Conference, reached the semifinals of the Ojai Valley Tournament and then made it all the way to the semifinals of the CCCAA State Championships in Fresno last month. It was the farthest an IVC doubles team had made it in the state tournament. Vuong and Loria had a record of 11-1 together during the regular season. Also ranked in the state in doubles were Irvine Valley's team of sophomore Katie Billings and freshman Megan Miller. Billings and Miller were ranked No. 27. Billings and Miller, playing primarily at No. 2 doubles for the Lasers, had a record of 11-4 during the regular season. Vuong and Loria each also made the rankings in singles. Vuong was ranked 20th in the state and Loria was ranked 24th. Vuong played No. 1 singles and Loria was IVC's No. 2 singles player this past season. Vuong had a record of 14-0 during the regular season in singles and made the Southern California Regionals. Loria had a record of 7-4 during the regular season. At the conclusion of the 2011 season, Vuong was named the conference player of the year and Loria was picked as a first team all-conference player.       State Rankings
 
5/14/2011  Vuong and Loria reach state tournament doubles semifinals
Irvine Valley sophomore women's tennis players Natalie Loria and Tina Vuong made it all the way to the semifinals in the doubles draw at the CCCAA State Championships at the Sierra Sport and Racquet Club in Fresno this week. It is the farthest any IVC players have ever reached in the state tournament. Vuong, the Orange Empire Conference MVP, and Loria, an all-conference player, were seeded third in the event. The duo won two matches in straight sets on Friday and then fell in the semis on Saturday to the eventual runner-up team from Grossmont College, 6-3, 6-4.     State Results     State Recap
 
5/9/2011  Irvine Valley's Tina Vuong named Orange Empire Conference MVPTina Vuong
IVC sophomore women's tennis player Tina Vuong was recently named the Orange Empire Conference's player of the year. Vuong had a singles record of 14-0 during the regular season for the Lasers, going 13-0 at the No. 1 position. She also went 12-1 in doubles, including 11-1 with teammate Natalie Loria at the No. 1 spot. Vuong was named all-conference in doubles with Loria. Loria was also selected an all-conference selection in singles. Loria had a record of 7-4 in singles on the season. Vuong and Loria helped IVC to a 10-5 record overall and a 7-3 mark in conference, which tied with Riverside for second in the final standings.
 
5/1/2011  IVC doubles team makes it to semifinals at Ojai Valley TournamentNatalie Loria
Sophomore women's tennis players Natalie Loria and Tina Vuong did something last week that no one else at Irvine Valley (men's or women's team) has ever accomplished. The duo made it to the semifinals in the doubles draw in the community college division at the prestigious Ojai Valley Tournament. Vuong, who was recently named the Orange Empire Conference player of the year, and Loria cruised through their first three matches. Loria and Vuong received a bye in the first round and then defeated Rachel Becker and Jacqueline Higa of Hancock, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round. The IVC pair then beat Sara Cardanza and Mia Hosaka of El Camino, 6-0, 6-1, in the round of 32. Loria and Vuong beat Karleyne Ishima-Oien and Mardee Littrell of Palomar, 6-1, 6-4, to Tina Vuongmake the quarterfinals. Loria and Vuong then defeated Jazmin Ortiz and Sharon Reibstein of Grossmont, 6-2, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals. In the semis, the rvine Valley team fell in three tough sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, to Sabrian Emery and Jourdan Jefferson of Mt. San Antonio at famed Libby Park in Ojai. Emery and Jefferson lost in the final to a team from Reedley in Northern California. Irvine Valley's other doubles team - freshman Megan Miller and sophomore Katie Billings - won a match before falling in the round of 32. In singles action, Irvine Valley's Vuong made it to the round of 16 before losing. She got a bye in the first round and then defeated Samantha Sismundo of Glendale, 6-0, 6-3, and Doris Obih of Fullerton, 6-0, 6-1 before falling to Denise Hromadkova of Bakersfield, 7-6, 6-0. IVC's freshman Mackenzie Shutler won a match in singles before losing in the second round.
 
4/16/2011  Irvine Valley doesn't get selected for the team playoffs
The Irvine Valley women's tennis team, which finished tied for second in the Orange Empire Conference, was left out of the Southern California Regional team playoffs. Saddleback, which went undefeated to win the conference title, advanced as did the team IVC tied with for second place - Riverside. Each conference champion automatically makes the eight-team regional field. IVC was hoping to get a wild card berth. Four teams were vying for three open spots. The Lasers were the team not picked. "Despite our results of coming the closest of any team that played Saddleback we were aced," IVC Coach Joan Meissenburg said. Irvine Valley lost to conference champion Saddleback, 5-4, both times this season. Meissenburg pointed out that Riverside, which made the playoffs, lost to Saddleback, 7-2, and, 8-1, this season. Irvine Valley finished with a record of 10-5 overall. Individual players will continue to compete for IVC at regionals, the Ojai Tournament and possibly the state tourney.
 
3/31/2011  Lasers nearly pull off the upset at SaddlebackNatalie Loria
Irvine Valley's women's tennis team came up just short against Saddleback again. Saddleback defeated Irvine Valley for the second straight time, 5-4, in an Orange Empire Conference match at Saddleback on Thursday. The win wrapped up the conference title for the Gauchos, who improved their record to 11-0 overall and 9-0 in conference. It was the 29th straight win for Saddleback, which is the defending state champion, dating back to the 2010 season. Thursday's match was close all the way through and only won by Saddleback with a final victory at No. 3 doubles. Keyt O’Neil and Lauren Fetter pulled out an 8-3 win over Irvine Valley's Ann Pham and Mackenzie Shutler. Irvine Valley, which saw its record slip to 9-5 overall and 6-3 in conference, won two of three doubles prosets, but it wasn't enough. IVC trailed, 4-2, after the six singles matches. In singles, IVC sophomore Tina Vuong earned a big 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over Avriel Tomaiko at the No. 1 position. And sophomore Natalie Loria won, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 singles for the Lasers, but IVC dropped the rest of the singles matches in straight sets. In doubles, Irvine Valley got wins from the teams of Loria and Vuong and freshman Megan Miller and sophomore Katie Billings. Irvine Valley, which went into the match tied for second in the conference standings with Riverside, finishes the regular season next Tuesday hosting Orange Coast at 2 p.m.

3/29/2011  Women's tennis team suffers tough conference loss to Riverside
Irvine Valley women's tennis team finds itself tied for second place in the Orange Empire Conference after suffering a tough 5-4 loss to Riverside on Tuesday at Riverside. Both teams are now tied with records of 6-2. Saddleback leads the conference at 8-0. IVC plays at Saddleback on Thursday. On Tuesday against Riverside, IVC got off to a great start. Sophomores Tina Vuong, Natalie Loria and Katie Billings captured the top three singles sets. Vuong had no trouble in winning, 6-0, 6-1. Loria came out on top, 6-3, 6-1 and Billings won, 6-2, 7-5. But IVC dropped the next three singles contests, including matches at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions in three sets. Then in doubles, Riverside won two of three sets, including one, 8-6, to earn the overall victory. IVC's lone win in doubles came from Vuong and Loria at the No. 1 spot, 8-4.

3/24/2011  Lasers edge Fullerton, remain in second place in standingsMegan Miller
The Irvine Valley women's college tennis team pulled out two of three doubles sets to beat Fullerton, 5-4, in an Orange Empire Conference match Thursday at Irvine Valley. The win kept the Lasers in second place in the standings, one match behind Saddleback for first. Fullerton and Irvine Valley were tied, three matches apiece, after the singles portion of Thursday's contest. Sophomore Tina Vuong defeated Tiffany Shaik, 6-3, 6-2, for IVC at No. 1 singles. Freshman Megan Miller (6-2, 6-0) at the No. 4 spot and freshman Mackenzie Shutler (6-2, 7-6) at the No. 5 position also won singles matches for Irvine Valley. Sophomore Katie Billings and sophomore Anna Pham each lost a tough three set matches in singles for the Lasers. IVC then earned the team win in doubles. Vuong and sophomore Natalie Loria teamed at No. 1 doubles to win, 8-4, and sophomore Katie Billings and Miller won, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles. Irvine Valley improved its record to 9-3 overall and 6-1 in conference. IVC hosts third-place Riverside in an important conference match on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

3/22/2011  Women's tennis team tops Cypress on the road in conference matchAnna Pham
After a week off for spring break, the Irvine Valley women's tennis team handled Cypress, 6-3, in an Orange Empire Conference match on the road Tuesday afternoon. Irvine Valley won four of six singles matches and two of three doubles contests. The Lasers swept at the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 singles spots. Sophomore Tina Vuong defeated Chelsea Logan, 6-0, 6-2, at the top position for Irvine Valley. Sophomore Katie Billings beat Trish Tran, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 3 singles and freshman Mackenzie Shutler came out on top, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5 singles for the Lasers. Irvine Valley sophomore Anna Pham came back from a set down to win a three-set match at No. 6 singles, defeating Jessica Zarate, 6-7, 6-1, 6-3. In doubles, IVC's top team of Vuong and Natalie Loria won, 8-2, at the No. 1 spot and Billings and freshman Megan Miller won, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. Irvine Valley improved its record to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in conference. The Lasers remain in second place in the conference standings behind Saddleback. Irvine Valley hosts Fullerton on Thursday at 2 p.m.

3/11/2011  Lasers drop first conference match, edged by rival Saddleback
The Irvine Valley women's tennis team came close, but could not top district and Orange Empire Conference rival Saddleback, last Thursday in a battle for the No. 1 spot in conference at IVC. Both teams were unbeaten in conference heading into the contest. Irvine Valley won two of three doubles matches, but it wasn't enough in a 5-4 loss to Saddleback. IVC took a 2-0 lead in matches after its top two singles players took care of business. Sophomore Tina Vuong defeated Avriel Tomaiko, 7-6, 6-2, at No. 1 singles and sophomore Natalie Loria beat Karley Pletcher, 6-0, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot for the Lasers. Saddleback won the next four singles matches, however, to take a commanding 4-2 lead heading into doubles. IVC won two of three doubles with the teams of Loria and Vuong and sophomore Anna Pham and freshman Mackenzie Shutler winning, but the Lasers still came up short. It was the 25th straight win for the Saddleback program. Saddleback improved its record to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in conference. Irvine Valley had its five-match win streak snapped and fell to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in conference. The Lasers have next week off for spring break before competing again at Cypress on March 22.

3/8/2011  Women's tennis team tops Riverside, moves to 4-0 in conference Mackenzie Shutler
The Irvine Vallley women's tennis team got by Riverside, 5-4, in an Orange Empire Conference match at Riverside on Tuesday. The victory sets up a showdown between unbeatens in conference on Thursday at IVC. The Lasers play Saddleback, which is also undefeated, at 2 p.m. Saddleback finished first and Irvine Valley was second in conference last year. Saddleback went on to win the state title. Tuesday's win improved Irvine Valley's record to 4-0 in conference and 7-2 overall. It was IVC's fifth win in a row overall. Irvine Valley won four of six singles matches and captured two of three doubles sets.  In singles, Irvine Valley No. 1 player Tina Vuong defeated Sara Racataian, 6-2, 6-1. Vuong also teammed with Natalie Loria to win at No. 1 doubles over the Riverside team of Brooke Vorhees and Natalie Tomlin, 8-5. IVC No. 3 singles player Katie Billings defeated Tomlin, 6-3, 6-1 and Mackenzie Shutler won at No. 5 singles for the Lasers, 6-4, 6-2. Irvine Valley lost singles matches at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 positions. Irvine Valley also won at No. 2 doubles with Billings and Megan Miller defeating Racataian and Brittany Gourlay, 8-4.
 
2/22/2011  Lasers win second straight match, top Orange Coast to begin conference Tina Vuong
The Irvine Valley women's tennis team won its second match in a row, beating Orange Coast, 8-1, to start Orange Empire Conference play on the road Tuesday. Irvine Valley won five of six singles contests with all of the Lasers' top five players earning victories. The top four players all won in straight sets. Sophomore Tina Vuong won, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1 singles, sophomore Natalie Loria won, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 2, sophomore Katie Billings came out on top, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3 and freshman Megan Miller won, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.
IVC freshman Mackenzie Shutler rallied for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles. Irvine Valley swept the doubles matches with Loria and Vuong winning at the No. 1 spot, 8-3, Miller and Billings winning, 9-8, at No. 2 and sophomore Anna Pham and Shutler winning, 8-2, at the No. 3 position. Irvine Valley improved its record to 4-2 overall on the season. The Lasers were coming off a 9-0 win over Cuyamaca in a non-conference match last week. Vuong, Billings, Miller, Shutler and Pham each won easy straight-set matches in singles for IVC. Vuong and Billings didn't drop a game and MIller and Shutler each only lost one game. Irvine Valley plays again Tuesday, March 1 at home against Cypress at 2 p.m.
