Women's soccer team ties Saddleback at home
Oct 02, 2009

The Irvine Valley women’s soccer team made the most of its opportunities Friday afternoon to earn a tie with Saddleback in an Orange Empire Conference match at Irvine Valley.

The Lasers, who played several minutes with just 10 players on the field because of injury, had just three shots on goal, but scored on two of them in the 2-2 draw.

The tie moved Irvine Valley’s record to 3-5-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference. Saddleback’s record is now 2-6-2 overall and 1-3-1 in conference.

"I thought the girls battled really hard today," IVC Coach Simon Davies said. "I was proud of all of them. They deserved to come away with something."

Saddleback got on the board first. In the 19th minute, Marissa Pickett took a pass from Madeline Horner, raced down the right sideline, angled toward the net and then lofted a high shot that bounced off the far post and went in.

The Gauchos carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Irvine Valley answered early in the second half with 10 players on the field. Brittney Threestar sent a through pass to Arabia Ruiz and Ruiz took two touches and then beat Saddleback’s keeper with a shot from just outside the penalty box to the lower left corner of goal.

Saddleback went up, 2-1, in the 71st minute on a heads up play by Pickett. Brittany Flores’ shot bounced off the crossbar, but Pickett was in the right spot to knock the ball in.

Back with 11 players, the Lasers tied it at 2-2 with 10 minutes to play in the contest.

Ruiz was on the end of another through ball, this time from Monica Ramirez. Ruiz scored her second goal of the game and seventh of the year.

Saddleback out-shot Irvine Valley, 11-3, in the match.

IVC hosts Santiago Canyon in another conference match on Tuesday at 1 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the Laser men’s team.
