Women's soccer team turns in dominating performance
Sep 04, 2009
The Irvine Valley women's soccer team earned its first win of the 2009 season and the Lasers did it in impressive fashion.
Irvine Valley scored three goals in a dominating second-half performance to beat Grossmont, 3-0, in a nonconference match at home on Friday.
IVC improved its record to 1-2-0 on the season.
It was the most goals Irvine Valley has scored in a match since a 3-1 win by the Lasers over Golden West on Sept. 19, 2006.
Freshman Arabia Ruiz also made some history for Irvine Valley on Friday.
She became the first player since the soccer program was reinstated in 2004 to score three goals in a match.
"It was good for the girls," Irvine Valley Coach Simon Davies said. "It was important after two defeats to come back and get a win. And not only a win, but an impressive win. We need to take this and build on it."
Four minutes into the second half, Ruiz stole the ball from a Grossmont defender near the top of the penalty box, took two touches and then beat the keeper with a shot to put Irvine Valley in front, 1-0.
Ruiz put the Lasers up, 2-0, in the 76th minute when she received a pass from freshman forward Monica Ramirez and one-timed a shot in.
And Ruiz capped her hat trick three minutes later when she once again stole the ball from a defender in the box and scored.
"She was great for us today," Davies said. "And she nearly had a couple more."
Ruiz had a shot from point blank range saved by Grossmont’s goalie earlier in the second half. Ruiz also set up another good chance for IVC in the second half, but Ramirez’s shot went just wide. Freshman midfielder Kelly Knaup also had a solid opportunity to score for IVC in the second half.
Irvine Valley out-shot Grossmont, 9-1, in the second half and, 13-5, for the match. IVC freshman goalie Christina Huapaya had to make just two saves in the contest.
The Lasers play again on Tuesday, traveling to Victor Valley for a nonconference contest.
