The Irvine Valley women’s soccer team had its four-match unbeaten streak stopped Friday afternoon with a 6-0 Orange Empire Conference loss to Cypress.
Cypress, expected to challenge with Santiago Canyon for the conference title, remained unbeaten on the season and undefeated in conference play.
The Lasers’ record dropped to 2-6-2 overall and 0-1-2 in conference. Cypress improved to 7-0-2 overall and 3-0 in conference.
Cypress wasted little time taking the lead, Kari Wathen got a hold of a loose ball in the box after a corner kick play and beat IVC goalie Lupe Jimenez with a high shot to the near post in the eighth minute.
Jackiee Roman then scored back-to-back goals, the second coming off a powerful right-footed blast from the middle of the box. Cypress led, 3-0, at halftime and added three more goals in the second half, the final two coming from Nicole Weil in the last seven minutes of play.
Jimenez, who made a couple of point blank stops in goal, finished with eight saves for the Lasers.
Irvine Valley plays again on Tuesday at Riverside. It will be the Lasers’ first road contest in conference play.
