Women's soccer team stays unbeaten in conference
Sep 23, 2008
The Irvine Valley women’s soccer team fought back from a goal deficit to earn a 1-1 tie against Orange Empire Conference leading Golden West Tuesday at home.
The tie was Irvine Valley’s fourth straight positive result. The Lasers (2-5-2, 0-0-2) have two wins and two ties in their last four contests.
Irvine Valley played right with the Rustlers, who were tied with Cypress atop the conference standings, each step of the game. Golden West (4-2-1, 2-0-1) finished with eight shots and IVC had seven.
"This team battles and it was great to see them come back in the second half and tie the game," IVC coach Simon Davies said. "They deserved it. It was another good day."
Golden West took a 1-0 lead in the first half when, after IVC couldn’t clear the ball out of its own box, Courtney Kolovos stepped in and beat Laser goalie Lupe Jimenez with a shot to the upper left corner.
Golden West out-shot IVC, 5-3, in the opening half.
But the Lasers picked up their play in the final 45 minutes. Six minutes into the second half, sophomore defender Kacie Bigos sent a pass forward in the direction of sophomore midfielder Julie Leguizamo. The ball bounced off the foot of a Golden West defender and right to Leguizamo, who found the lower left corner of the net.
Both teams had only a couple of chances the rest of the half. Golden West’s best came in the 53rd minute when Brittany Whittmore hit a line drive shot from the right side toward goal, but Jimenez made a diving save to knock the ball a way.
The Rustlers also had a goal by Daisy Hurtado called back in the final 10 minutes when it was ruled that Hurtado was offside.
Jimenez finished with four saves for Irvine Valley. Golden West keeper Veronica Helguera had three saves.
IVC plays at home again on Friday, hosting unbeaten and conference favorite Cypress at 3 p.m.
