Women's soccer team picks up first victory
Sep 10, 2008
The Irvine Valley women's soccer team earned its first positive result of the season, pulling out a 1-0 win over Chaffey Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game at IVC.
The Lasers had dropped their first five contests of the year.
Neither team had very many opportunities to score, but IVC made the most of its best chance.
With six minutes to play, freshman forward Eva Khalili found sophomore forward Nora Garcia with a pass from left to right.
Garcia took three dribbles toward goal and then fired a low near the top of the box that deflected off Chaffey goalie Samantha Galvin and rolled into the right corner of the net.
Chaffey out-shot IVC, 8-2, in the contest. Chaffey's best chance to score came with 15 minutes left on a shot from close range, but IVC sophomore keeper Lupe Jimenez made a diving save.
Jimenez finished with four saves in the match.
"This was huge for us," IVC Coach Simon Davies said. "I was very pleased with the way the girls kept fighting today."
The loss dropped Chaffey's record to 4-3-0 on the seaons. The Panthers had defeated Santa Ana, one of IVC's rivals in the Orange Empire Conference, 4-1, on Tuesday.
Irvine Valley plays again on Friday at home against Miracosta at 3 p.m. It will be the second of five straight home matches for the Lasers.
