Women's soccer team ties Riverside
Nov 06, 2007

The Irvine Valley women’s soccer team earned its second tie in its last three games, drawing with Riverside, 1-1, in an Orange Empire Conference match Tuesday afternoon at home.

Irvine
Valley took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. The play started with freshman forward Taylor Hoesterey sending a free kick from about 35 yards out on the left side into the Riverside box. The ball fell to freshman forward Diana Suarez. Suarez couldn’t get a good foot on it, but freshman midfielder Julie Leguizamo was there to knock the loose ball into the net.

It was Leguizamo’s first goal of the season. Suarez recorded her team-leading 13th point (6 goals, 1 assist) with the assist.

Riverside
nearly tied the contest just before halftime. Kayla Caywood sent a high shot from nearly 40 yards out toward the Laser goal. IVC keeper Jillian Toney tipped the ball and it then hit off the crossbar before bouncing away.

Caywood put a shot away in midway through the second half to tie the score. She received a through pass from Angela Castillo and then beat Toney with a shot to the left side of the goal.

It was the Lasers’ turn to hit the post next. IVC nearly broke the 1-1 tie in the 69th minute.

Hoesterey served a corner kick that freshman midfielder Angela Molina headed on frame, but the ball hit off the crossbar.

In the 80th minute, Caywood hit the side post with a shot from distance again.

The game ended in a 1-1 tie. Toney and Riverside goalie Shannon Kendrick each made three saves in the contest.

Irvine Valley's record moved to 2-14-3 overall and 2-10-3 in conference, while Riverside's record went to 1-16-3 overeall and 1-11-3 in conference.

IVC defeated Riverside, 2-1, the first time the two teams played.

The Lasers finish the regular season on Thursday at home, hosting Saddleback in a conference match at 3 p.m.
