The Irvine Valley women's soccer team played Santa Ana tough for 45 minutes.
But the Dons scored two goals in the second half to earn a 2-0 Orange Empire Conference win on Monday at Irvine Valley.
Irvine Valley's record slipped to 2-12-1 overall and 2-8-1 in conference.
Freshman forward Daisy Ramos scored both goals for Santa Ana, which improved its record to 6-7-3 overall and 5-3-3 in conference.
The contest was a make-up match. It was originally scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 23, but was pushed back because of the unhealthy air quality in the Irvine area due to the Santiago fire.
Monday’s game was scoreless at halftime. Santa Ana out-shot IVC, 5-1, in the first half.
The Dons best chance to score came just eight minutes into the game. Nancy Garcia got past IVC goalie Lupe Jimenez and rolled a shot toward an open net, but Laser freshman defender Cassidy Minko raced to the goal and cleared the ball off the line and out of bounds.
Later in the first half, Ramos sent a shot from the right side that hit off the crossbar and deflected away.
But Ramos scored four minutes into the second half off a pass from Nancy Garcia and then Ramos put the game away with nine minutes left. A shot by Yuri Marin bounced off Jimenez in goal and Ramos was there to knock in the rebound. The goals were Ramos’ team-leading ninth and 10th of the season and gave her 26 points on the year.
Jimenez finished with four saves in goal for the Lasers.
It was Irvine Valley’s first game since Oct. 16. The Lasers had a bye on Oct. 19 and then had all their matches postponed last week because of the fire-related conditions.
This was the first of four matches for IVC this week. The team plays at Cypress on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
