The Irvine Valley women's soccer team played one of its best halves of the season Tuesday afternoon, but it wasn't quite enough.
Freshman midfielder Jori King scored a goal with just under seven minutes to play to give Fullerton a 3-2 Orange Empire Conference victory over Irvine Valley at Irvine Valley.
The win was Fullerton’s second straight.
King scored on a shot from the right side of the box that beat IVC goalie Lupe Jimenez near post. Amanda Phillips sent a cross into Walsh, who then passed the ball back to set up King.
Irvine Valley had tied the game at 2-2 on a goal by freshman forward Diana Suarez in the 68th minute. It was Suarez’s team-leading third goal of the season.
“We played good enough to win and bad enough to lose,” IVC Coach Simon Davies said. “Our mistakes really cost us.”
Fullerton opened the scoring late in the first half. The Hornets took advantage by a mistake by the IVC goalie and forward Amanda Phillips tapped the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Fullerton out-shot Irvine Valley, 7-2, in the first half, but it was a different story in the second half where IVC out-shot the Hornets, 9-4.
The Lasers had three opportunities to score in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Suarez missed on a header wide, freshman forward Taylor Hoesterey sent a free kick over the top of the goal and then Suarez had a shot on a header saved by Fullerton keeper Allison Sheehy.
IVC tied the game, 1-1, in the 55th minute when Hoestery sent a penalty kick past Sheehy. Fullerton had been called for a hand ball in the penalty area.
Fullerton then went up, 2-1, on a goal by King off an assist by Rachel Lopez.
Irvine Valley's record slipped to 1-9-0 overall and 1-5-0 and Fullerton improved to 3-6-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference.
