Women's soccer team edged by Golden West
Sep 14, 2007
In its best chance to win a game so far this season, the Irvine Valley women's soccer team came up a little short, falling, 1-0, to Golden West Friday afternoon in an Orange Empire Conference game at IVC.
Both teams went into the match-up searching for their first victory of the season.
Irvine Valley out-shot Golden West, 10-7, in the contest and had the better opportunities to score, but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Laser freshman forward Taylor Hoesterey’s shot on a free kick from 35 yards out hit the crossbar and bounced away in the 28th minute.
Golden West took a 1-0 lead three minutes later after an IVC defender was called for a handball in the penalty box.
Shawna Valero scored on the penalty kick, knocking the shot into the lower left corner of the goal past the diving effort of IVC goalie Lupe Jimenez.
IVC out-shot Golden West, 6-3, in the opening half.
The second half was evenly played with each team having four shots on goal, but none of the attempts found their mark.
Irvine Valley has a bye from conference action next Tuesday and plays again Friday, Sept. 21 at Santa Ana at 3 p.m.
