Oct 20, 2006
The Golden West women's soccer team earned its first Orange Empire Conference victory of the season with a 3-0 win over Irvine Valley Friday afternoon at IVC.
The victory also broke an 11-match losing streak for the Rustlers. The loss was Irvine Valley’s eighth straight. All have been by shutout.
Golden West scored all three goals in the final seven minutes to pull off the win. Maria Sanchez scored from close range off a cross from Carmina Nunez in the 83rd minute. Courtney Kolovos made the score 2-0.
She followed up her first shot that was blocked by an IVC defender, burying the rebound into the upper right corner.
Golden West’s final goal came with just a minute left. A Rustler player was taken down in the box and Rebecca Garcia converted the penalty kick.
Garcia nearly gave Golden West the lead late in the first half, but her shot from close range was saved by Irvine Valley goalie Amanda Shay.
Shay finished with six saves in goals for Irvine Valley.
The Lasers defeated the Rustlers the first time the two teams met, 3-1.
Irvine Valley plays at Santa Ana on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
