Women's soccer team gets first win of the year
Sep 19, 2006
The Irvine Valley women's soccer team earned its first win of the 2006 season Tuesday afternoon and the Lasers did it in dramatic fashion.
The Lasers came back from being a goal down early to win 3-1 on the road at Golden West in an Orange Empire Conference match-up.
"We got nice contributions from a lot of players and scored a couple of very good goals," Irvine Valley Coach Simon Davies said. "Our defense also played very well."
Irvine Valley's defense withstood pressure by the Rustlers, who were pushing everyone forward, late in the contest. Irvine Valley goalie Amanda Shay made several fine saves. She finished with eight saves overall.
"The girls were all very happy," Davies said. "It is a good win. We will take them where we can get them."
Golden West took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. Irvine Valley responded with a goal by Nora Garcia off a pass from Arlette Salazar in the 25th minute.
The Lasers took the lead about 10 minutes later when Haley Rosner cut inside a defender and then beat the Golden West keeper with a shot. Johnnie Mar got the assist on the play.
Irvine Valley went up, 3-1, midway in the second half when Rosner scored again. She fired a shot from near the top of the box on the right side that found the upper corner of the net.
"That was a real cracker of a goal," Davies said. "We were wondering where that came from. But Haley is a very good player. She is capable of a lot."
Irvine Valley (1-6-0) will go for two wins in a row on Friday when it takes on Santa Ana at home at 3 p.m.
