The Irvine Valley College women's soccer team started Orange Empire Conference play on Tuesday with a tough 1-0 loss to Fullerton at home.
Irvine Valley's record slipped to 1-7-0 on the season, while Fullerton improved to 3-2-1 overall.
Fullerton out-shot Irvine Valley, 19-3, in the game.
The Hornets had two good chances to score in the first half, including one shot that was cleared off the goal line by an Irvine Valley defender.
Early in the second half, Fullerton’s Patricia Gallagher hit the post with a shot from close range.
The Hornets got on the board in the 25th minute of the second half when Shanyn Wong sent a through pass to Megan Shires, who beat out an Irvine Valley defender for the ball and then fired a shot by Irvine Valley goalie Rachel Waters.
Waters made nine saves on the day to improve her total on the year to 51.
The Lasers’ best chance to score came in the closing minutes on a free kick from about 25 yards out.
Kathleen Benton sent a shot on goal, but Fullerton keeper Kelli Fasano was able to stop the ball on a short-hop for the save.
IVC has a bye on Friday and will host Golden West in another Orange Empire Conference game next Tuesday at 3 p.m.
