11/11/2011 Women's soccer gets late goal from Romero to beat Saddleback
The Irvine Valley women’s soccer team earned its best win of the 2011 season in its final game of the year. The Lasers defeated district rival Saddleback, 1-0, in an Orange Empire Conference match at Irvine Valley. Neither team had any great chances to score until late in the second half. Saddleback did hit the post with a free kick. But with the match looking like it was headed to a 0-0 draw, freshman Ashley Romero turned in the highlight moment of the season for the Lasers. Her high, hard shot from about 30 yards out in the 89th minute sailed over the reach of Saddleback’s goalie and found the back of the net to give Irvine Valley the win. It was Romero’s second goal of the season. Freshman Kayla McLaughlin earned the assist on the goal. IVC freshman goalie Amanda Rashtian had three saves to post her third shutout of the season and second in conference play. Irvine Valley improved its record to 3-14-3 overall and 2-12-2 in conference, while Saddleback’s record finished at 5-14-2 overall and 5-10-1 in conference.
11/8/2011 Women's soccer team falls late to Riverside
The Irvine Valley women’s soccer team was one half away from picking up its third win of the season Tuesday afternoon in its Orange Empire Conference match against Riverside at home.
But the Tigers snatched a result away from the Lasers, scoring in the 62nd and then 83rd minutes to earn a 2-1 victory. Irvine Valley’s record slipped to 2-14-3 overall and 1-12-2 in conference, while Riverside improved to 8-9-3 overall and 5-9-1 in conference. Irvine Valley looked like it had gotten on the board 15 minutes into the contest, but the Lasers had a goal called back for offsides. The Lasers did take a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute after freshman midfielder Stephanie Garza was taken down in the penalty box. Sophomore forward Kathryn Moyneur placed the penalty kick into the lower left corner of the goal to give IVC a 1-0 lead. The game remained that way until the 62nd minute when Riverside scored on a penalty kick of its own. Yesenia Garcia was taken down in the box. Yesenia converted the PK, beating IVC freshman goalie Amanda Rashtian with a shot to the lower left corner. Irvine Valley went down to 10 players after a Laser received a red card four minutes later. Riverside earned the game-winning goal with seven minutes to play when Kayla Cates headed in a cross from Alyssa Mendibles. Rashtian made four saves in goal for the Lasers, while Riverside keeper Jordin Crosby made one save. Irvine Valley finishes the regular season on Friday with a home game against district rival Saddleback at 1 p.m.
11/1/2011 Lasers battle Cypress in 3-0 defeat
The Irvine Valley women's soccer team played tough, but couldn't come up with enough stops in a 3-0 loss to Cypress in an Orange Empire Conference. With a defensive mindset in place, the Lasers stifled Cypress for the opening 20 minutes before the Chargers got on the board with a goal by Kayla Arenas. IVC held Cypress to just one goal in the first half. Cypress added two more goals in the second half - from Jacqueline Lara in the 51st minute and Malori Patea in the 53rd minute - for the 3-0 victory. IVC freshman goalie Amanda Rashtian finished with nine saves. The defeat dropped Irvine Valley's record to 2-12-3 overall and 1-10-2 in conference. Cypress remained in third place in the conference standings, improving its record to 10-4-4 overall and 7-2-4 in conference. IVC plays at Fullerton on Friday at 3 p.m. The Lasers defeated Fullerton, 3-1, the first time the two teams met this season.
10/25/2011 Women's soccer team ties for the second match in a row
The Irvine Valley women's soccer team picked up another point in the result column. For the second straight contest, IVC earned a tie. The Lasers traveled to Santa Ana on Tuesday and tied the Dons, 0-0, in an Orange Empire Conference match. Irvine Valley improved its record to 2-10-3 overall and 1-8-2 in conference. Santa Ana snapped a three-game losing streak, but didn't score for its fourth straight contest. The Dons' record moved to 5-10-1 overall and 4-6-1 in conference. Both teams had one strong scoring chance late in the game with the first one belonging to the Lasers when sophomore forward Kathryn Moyneur fired a shot off the crossbar in the 66th minute. The Dons best opportunity came in the 86th minute but Maria Ayala's shot also hit off the crossbar. Stephanie Hernandez turned away both shots she faced for the Dons while IVC freshman goalie Amanda Rashtian made seven saves for the Lasers. Irvine Valley plays again on Friday at Orange Coast at 3 p.m. It will be Irvine Valley's sixth straight match on the road. The Lasers are home again next Tuesday against Cypress at 3 p.m.
10/18/2011 Women's soccer team ties at Golden West
The Irvine Valley women's soccer team earned a tie and nearly got a win in an Orange Empire Conference match at Golden West Tuesday afternoon. Freshman midfielder Stephanie Garza scored her first goal of the season in the 75th minute to give the Lasers a 1-0 lead. It came on a loose ball in the box after a corner kick by freshman defender Colleen Joyce. Golden West was able to score with just minutes to play to tie the match at 1-1 and that is the way it ended. Still, the Lasers played much better against the Rustlers this time around. Golden West defeated Irvine Valley, 3-0, earlier this season at IVC. "Golden West had possession, but we stayed very disciplined," IVC Coach Simon Davies said. "I was really happy for Steph and the way she finished for our goal." Freshman keeper Amanda Rashtian also played well and had seven saves for the Lasers. IVC, which improved its record to 2-9-2 overall and 1-8-1 in conference, has a bye from conference action on Friday and plays again at Santa Ana next Tuesday at 3 p.m.
10/11/2011 Women's soccer team loses to Saddleback
After earning its best win of the season last week, the Irvine Valley women's soccer team has lost two matches in a row. The team was edged at Riverside, 3-1, last Friday and then lost to Saddleback, 3-0, on the road Tuesday night. Against Riverside last week, Irvine Valley tied the match in the 88th minute on an unassisted goal by sophomore
Stephanie Horwitz, but then gave up a goal a minute later on a free kick and then another in extra time to fall. Short-handed due to injuries on Tuesday, IVC battled Saddleback, but couldn't keep the Gauchos out of the back of the net. Saddleback led, 1-0, at halftime on a goal in the 24th minute. The Gauchos then scored goals in the 48th and 58th minutes for the win. IVC freshman keeper
Amanda Rashtian had five saves in goal against Riverside and then finished with 12 saves against Saddleback. The losses dropped IVC's record to 2-9-1 overall and 1-7-0 in conference. Irvine Valley starts the second round of conference action on Friday with a match at Santiago Canyon at 3 p.m.
The Irvine Valley women’s soccer team picked up its first win in Orange Empire Conference play this season with a 3-1 victory over Fullerton Tuesday afternoon at IVC. The Lasers, who also broke a seven-match winless streak, scored the first two goals of the contest, added an insurance goal midway through the second half and then held strong defensively at the end. Irvine Valley goalie Amanda Rashtian finished with 11 saves in the contest, including eight in the second half. IVC (2-7-1, 1-5-0) played the final 18 minutes with just 10 players after having a player sent off with a red card. “I thought we played tough up until that point and then even tougher (with 10 players),” IVC Coach Simon Davies said. “And we had to. We cleared a couple of balls off the (goal) line and Amanda did really well. That was a big win.” Irvine Valley took advantage of its first good opportunity to score in the contest. Freshman midfielder Colleen Joyce played a pass ahead to sophomore forward Kathryn Moyneur. Moyneur got the ball past a defender and then beat Fullerton goalie Nadia Ruiz with a shot in the 13th minute. It was Moyneur’s team-leading fourth goal of the season. Irvine Valley went up, 2-0, nine minutes later when freshman forward Kayla
McLaughlin scored her first goal as a Laser. Sophomore defender Stephanie Horwitz sent a free kick forward toward the top of the Fullerton box. Ruiz came off her line to challenge for the ball and McLaughlin was able to roll the ball by her and into the net. Fullerton made it a 2-1 game in the 29th minute when Madisen Winder scored on a shot into the left upper corner of the goal. Freshman Ashley Romero nearly scored for IVC in the 62nd minute, but her shot just missed wide left. And three minutes later Fullerton had a chance to even the game, but a close-range shot by Monique Moran was blocked by IVC freshman defender Amy Marchi and then the rebound shot by Winder was saved by Rashtian. Romero did score for the Lasers in the 70th minute. She ran on to a pass through by Horwitz, out-raced the defense and then slotted a shot by Ruiz to give Irvine Valley a 3-1 lead. “We really needed that goal,” Davies said. “That was huge.” Because two minutes later, IVC was down to 10 players after a red card. Fullerton (4-5-1, 3-3-0) pressured IVC relentlessy in the final 15 minutes. But freshman defender Nakisa Motamedi cleared a shot off the line and with two minutes left, Rashtian saved a penalty kick. After a hand ball was called on Irvine Valley in the box, Fullerton’s Andrea Torres appeared to score on the penalty kick. But the referee called the goal back for encroachment into the box on a Fullerton player during the kick. Torres had to take the PK again and this time Rashtian guessed right, diving to her right to make the save. “I thought all of the girls gave a great effort today,” Davies said. “They really kept battling to the very end.”
Irvine Valley’s women’s soccer team ran into a hot Orange Coast squad Tuesday afternoon in an Orange Empire Conference match at IVC. The Pirates won their second game in a row and shut out their second straight opponent with a 6-0 victory over the Lasers. In their last two contests, OCC has out-scored opponents, 9-0. Orange Coast improved its record to 5-3-1 overall and 3-2-0 in conference. Irvine Valley is still looking for its first conference victory. The Lasers’ record slipped to 1-6-1 overall and 0-4-0 in conference. IVC Coach Simon Davies thought freshman defender Amy Marchi played well and freshman midfielder Kayla McLaughlin, who was making her first appearance of the season for IVC, worked hard in her time on the field in the second half. Orange Coast blew the game open in the second half with five goals. Caitlin Padian gave OCC a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when she scored on a shot from the left side off a p
ass from Nicole Vanderlaan. Emma Pridmore then scored three straight goals in the first 14 minutes of the second half for the Pirates. The first came from close range after Vanderlaan sent a free kick into the box in the 52nd minute. Pridmore finished a pass from Vanderlaan in the 55th minute and then Pridmore scored her third goal on a shot from long range in the 59th minute. The assist went to Kiley Leshin. The Pirates took a 5-0 lead on a goal off a penalty kick by Leshin in the 65th minute. Orange Coast closed out the scoring in the 88th minute when Natalie Seroka found the back of the net on a shot from 25 yards out. Lauren Zepeda picked up the assist. Irvine Valley goalie Amanda Rashtian finished with eight saves on the day. OCC goalie Katelyn O’Banion made one save. Irvine Valley plays again on Friday at Cypress at 3 p.m. It hosts Fullerton next Tuesday at 3 p.m.
9/23/2011 Women's soccer team edged by Santa Ana
The Irvine Valley women’s soccer team played one of its better games of the season Friday afternoon. But it wasn’t quite enough to get a result. Santa Ana scored with 10 minutes left to pull out a 1-0 victory in an Orange Empire Conference match at Irvine Valley. “I really thought we played quite well,” IVC Coach Simon Davies said. “We moved the ball and created a few chances. I was proud of the girls. But soccer is a funny game sometimes.” Santa Ana’s goal came in the 80th minute when Erica Flores sent a through ball on the left wing ahead to Suzanne Swenson. Swenson beat the Laser defensive line to the ball and then hit a shot that got by charging IVC keeper Amanda Rashtian and into the right corner of the goal. Santa Ana had two legitimate chances to score in the first half as well. But a header by Flores bounced off the post and a deep shot by Yesenia Fonseca was turned away by a diving save by Rashtian. Santa Ana out-shot Irvine Valley, 12-5, in the contest. It was Santa Ana’s second straight conference win. The Dons improved their record to 3-6-0 overall and 2-1-0 in conference. Irvine Valley’s record slipped to 1-5-1 overall and 0-3-0 in conference. The Lasers will try and get their first conference victory next Tuesday when they host Orange Coast at 3 p.m.
9/13/2011 Lasers battle, but fall short against Santiago Canyon
The Irvine Valley women’s soccer team played Santiago Canyon tough for the first 75 minutes, but gave up three goals in an eight-minute span and ended up losing, 4-0, in the Orange Empire Conference opener for both squads Tuesday afternoon at Irvine Valley. IVC had a defensive game-plan in mind against conference favorite Santiago Canyon, who went into the match undefeated and had out-scored its four previous opponents, 14-1. The Lasers did a good job of stifling the Hawks chances in the opening half until two minutes into extra time when Bianca Frontino scored off a pass from Cydney Mandel to give Santiago Canyon a 1-0 lead. Freshman goalie Amanda Rashtian made six saves for IVC in the opening half. IVC’s defense, led by sophomores Madison Lamont and Stephanie Horwitz and freshmen Nakisa Motamedi and Ashley Romero with help by freshmen defensive midfielders Amy Marchi and Jenna Mish, continued to battle in the second half. The Lasers kept Santiago off the board in the second half until the 76th minute when Ashley Caligiuri scored her first of two goals in a three-minute span. The two goals – off assists from Valerie Barrios and Jenna Patel – gave Santiago Canyon a 3-0 lead. Santiago Canyon closed out the scoring in the 84th minute when Patel found the back of the net off an assist from Caligiuri. Rashtian finished with eight saves on the day for the Lasers, who saw their record slip to 1-3-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference. Ashley Cooper made one save for the Hawks, who improved to 5-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play. Irvine Valley plays again on Friday at home – its fourth straight match at IVC – when it hosts Golden West at 3 p.m. The Lasers split matches with Golden West in conference last season.
9/9/2011 Women's soccer team plays well in tie with MiraCosta
Irvine Valley’s women’s soccer team couldn’t pull out a victory, but played solid in its final tune-up before the start of Orange Empire Conference play. The Lasers came away with a 1-1 draw with MiraCosta in a non-conference match on Friday at Irvine Valley. IVC played their best match of the season so far, according to Coach Simon Davies. “I am pleased with the effort,” Davies said. “It was a physical match against a good team. And we continued to work hard until the end.” Neither team scored in the opening half. MiraCosta had the best chance, but Irvine Valley freshman goalie Amanda Rashtian made a diving save on a close-range shot. The contest remained scoreless until the 71st minute when freshman midfielder Amy Marchi took a pass and then chipped a shot over the head of MiraCosta goalie Sigfrid Garvey and into the back of the net. It was Marchi’s second goal of the season. But Irvine Valley’s lead was short lived. Ten minutes later, MiraCosta knotted the score on a left-footed finish by Elizabeth Rivas. Irvine Valley tried to push for a winning goal, but couldn’t find it. The best opportunity came in the 85th minute when freshman midfielder Stephanie Garza just missed wide from the right side on a one-on-one chance with the keeper. Irvine Valley out-shot MiraCosta, 8-7, in the contest. The Lasers’ record moved to 1-2-1 on the season. Irvine Valley hosts conference favorite Santiago Canyon next Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the OEC opener for both teams. MiraCosta saw its record go to 3-1-1 on the season.
9/6/2011 Women's soccer team falls short against Southwestern
The Irvine Valley women’s soccer team gave Southwestern everything it could handle in a 2-1 non-league loss in IVC’s home opener Tuesday afternoon. Southwestern scored the first two goals of the game – both coming in the first half – but IVC battled to the end and controlled the final 20 minutes of the match. IVC had the best early chance in the game. Sophomore Stephanie Horwitz rocketed a shot from the top of the box that Southwestern keeper Karina Himan was able to punch over the top of the goal with a lunging save. Southwestern got on the board in the 14th minute. Jessica Villa took a shot on the right side that Irvine Valley goalie Amanda Rashtian was able to deflect and save, but the ball popped up right to Uilani Himan on the back post and she headed it in. Horwitz nearly scored again for the Lasers in the 29th minute. She beat two defenders and lofted a left-footed shot from distance that clipped the post and bounced away. Southwestern made it a 2-0 lead in the 40th minute on a goal by Viviana Martinez. The score remained that way until the 87th minute when Irvine Valley sophomore forward Kathryn Moyneur scored her third goal of the season. Moyneur took a pass from freshman midfielder Amy Marchi and belted a line-drive shot from outside the box that beat Himan and made it a 2-1 game. Irvine Valley had a chance to tie the score in the 89th minute. Colleen Joyce tried to get to a loose ball in the box, but the Himan, the Southwestern goalie was able to fall on it. The win improved Southwestern’s record to 2-1-0 overall. Irvine Valley’s record slipped to 1-2-0 overall. “We gave up two poor goals in the first half, but came back in the second half and played with much more intensity,” Irvine Valley Coach Simon Davies said. “We almost managed to save the game. There were still a lot of positives.” Irvine Valley plays again on Friday, hosting MiraCosta in a non-league match at 3 p.m.
9/2/2011 Women's soccer team shuts out West LA
Irvine Valley's women's soccer team won its first game of the season on Friday. The Lasers earned a 3-0 victory at West Los Angeles to improve their record to 1-1-0 on the season. Sophomore forward Kathryn Moyneur scored two goals and freshman midfielder Amy Marchi had one goal. IVC led, 1-0, at halftime. Coach Simon Davies said his team had many more chances to score in a game that the Lasers completely dominated. Freshman Amanda Rashtian had to make just one save in goal for the shutout. "It is good to get in the win column," Davies said. "Everyone got a chance to play and everyone played hard. We will keep practicing and improving and try to build on this." IVC started the season with a 2-0 defeat at Rio Hondo last Friday. Rashtian made five saves in that contest. Irvine Valley plays its first home match of the season next Tuesday. The Lasers host Southwestern at 3 p.m.
