Women's golf team gears up for conference finals
Oct 22, 2009
The Irvine Valley women's golf team wrapped up its regular season competition by hosting Fullerton in an Orange Empire Conference match at Oak Creek on Wednesday.
Sam Roberts, Nicole Rivera and Tiffany Kane posted the best three individual scores of the match, which was completed in near darkness.
Roberts, a sophomore, was playing a solid round and appeared to be ready to post a score in the 70's.
However, bunker trouble on the final hole, produced a quadruple bogey for a final score of 81. Roberts had one birdie, 10 pars, five bogeys, a double bogey and a quadruple bogey.
Rivera posted her high round of the season with a score of 82. She had twp birdies, eight pars, five bogeys, a double bogey and two triple bogeys.
A lost tee shot and three three putts led to a front nine score of 43. Rivera was recovering nicely on the closing nine holes when she triple-bogeyed the par 3 hole No. 16. She parred the next two holes for a final nine hole score of 39.
Kane parred the first four holes and opened with a front nine score of 40.
However, Kane triple-bogeyed the 10th and 18th holes for a back nine score of 45 and a final score of 85. Kane had one birdie, six pars, nine bogeys, and two triple bogeys.
Heading into the conference finals on Nov. 2 and 4 at El Prado in Chino, it looks like IVC has a great shot to have the top two players in the conference.
Irvine Valley also had the top two players last year with Felicia Titus (now playing at Cal State Fullerton) and Roberts finishing first and second.
Rivera, with her throwout score of 82, has used 617 strokes for an 11-stroke lead over Roberts.
Roberts has used 628 offical strokes to be second.
Kane has used 686 official strokes and is currently in eighth place in the conference scoring averages.
IVC Coach Ben Burnett remains confident that all three of the IVC players will earn all-conference recognition and advance to the Southern California Regionals on Nov. 9 at Los Serranos in Chino Hills.
