Rivera and Roberts increase golf scoring lead
Oct 19, 2009
Irvine Valley women's golfers Nicole Rivera and Sam Roberts posted the only scores in the 70's at Monday's five-way Orange Empire Conference match on the par 73 Chino Creek course at El Prado in Chino.
The IVC duo continued to distance itself from the individuals on the other conference teams for player of the year recognition.
Rivera's round of 76 included two birdies, 13 pars, two bogeys and one triple bogey. After the first 15 holes, she was one over par.
"Her costly triple bogey came on a short par 3 when her tee shot landed in a bunker that guards the front of the green," IVC Coach Ben Burnett said. "But Nicole rebounded with a par and a birdie on holes 17 and 18."
Roberts scored a pair of 39's for her 5 over par score of 78. She had one birdie, 11 pars and six bogeys.
"Sam continues to lead the team in the ability to avoid scores higher than a bogey during her competitive rounds," Burnett said.
Burnett said IVC's third player, Tiffany Kane, played 13 holes according to game plan. But her four double bogeys and a triple bogey derailed her plan to post two consecutive scores in the 70's, Burnett said.
"I still expect Tiffany to remain among the top seven to 10 scorers in the conference," Burnett said.
IVC has one remaining match before conference finals. It hosts Fullerton Wednesday. Tee off is at 1 p.m. at Oak Creek.
