Rivera and Roberts lead IVC at Arroyo Trabuco
Oct 08, 2009
Irvine Valley women's golf players Nicole Rivera and Sam Roberts maintained their No. 1 and No. 2 individual rankings in the Orange Empire Conference in a match against Saddleback at Arroyo Trabuco golf course on Wednesday.
Both shot 9 over par scores of 81 at the tricky hillside course noted for fairways that bank steeply toward the lateral hazard stakes.
Rivera's opening three holes were a roller coaster ride. On the first hole, she hit her approach shot into the hole for an eagle.
She followed that with a quadruple bogey and then a birdie.
For the round, Rivera had one eagle, two birdies, six pars, seven bogeys, a double bogey and a quadruple bogey.
Coach Ben Burnett reviewed the round with Rivera and later suggested that when playing a course that is unfamiliar and known to be tricky "a greater emphasis on course management and strategy is needed to avoid posting higher than expected scores."
Roberts' 9 over par round of 81 included one birdie, nine pars, seven bogeys and one triple bogey.
Freshman Tiffany Kane finished with a score of 90 for the Lasers. She hit many good tee shots, but had trouble masting the speed of the greens.
Kane finished with one birdie, six pars, nine bogeys, one double bogey, two triple bogeys and one quadruple bogey.
Saddleback won the team contest because IVC only has three players instead of the four that are needed for scoring.
On Monday, IVC hosts Santiago Canyon at 1 p.m. at Oak Creek
