IVC golfer Sam Roberts sensational at El Prado
Sep 21, 2009

Irvine Valley sophomore women's golf player Sam Roberts posted her best score of the season - actually of her life - shooting an impressive 4 under par round of 69 on the par 73 Chino Creek/El Prado Course in an Orange Empire Conference match against host Santiago Canyon on Monday.

Roberts' front nine score was an even par 36. She was still at even par with four holes to go and then made four straight birdies.

Roberts told IVC Coach Ben Burnett afterward that the score was her best ever.

"I was very happy for Sam," Burnett said. "I am unaware of anyone shooting a lower round of competitive golf in the history of the Orange Empire Conference.

"As I told the team, when we realized that we would not be able to defend our conference championship (because IVC doesn't have the required four players to score as a team, the three young ladies representing IVC all had the potential to make the all-conference team and compete in the State Championships.

"This score gets Sam back on track to achieve that goal."

Roberts had six birdies, 10 pars, two bogeys on the day.

IVC freshman Nicole Rivera fnished with a 7 over par score of 80 and freshman Tiffany Kane finished with a 15 over par score of 88 in the match.

Rivera had one birdie, 10 pars, six bogeys and one double bogey, while Kane ended with eight pars, six bogeys, three double bogeys and one triple bogey.

Host Santiago Canyon earned wins over IVC and Fullerton with a team score of 319. Fullerton posted a team score of 407.

The next event for Irvine Valley is the League Cup at Riverview Golf Course on Sept. 28. IVC can't defend its title from last year because it doesn't have four players.

"We will play a practice round in front of the competing schools and return the cup to be awarded this he winner of this year's competition," Burnett said.

On Sept. 30, IVC will take on Santa Ana at Riverview in a conference match.
