Two women's golfers qualify for state tourney
Nov 12, 2008
Irvine Valley freshmen golfers Felicia Titus and Samantha Roberts placed among the top six individuals at the Southern California Regionals on Tuesday at Desert Dunes in Desert Hot Springs to qualify for the State Championship next week.
Titus and Roberts were the top two golfers this season in the Orange Empire Conference.
Titus finished in a tie for the third best score at the regionals. Roberts tied for
the sixth best score.
The top six scoring players earned recognition as members of
the all-Southern California team.
Titus and Roberts now move on to play at the California Community College State Championship on Nov. 17-18 at Olivas Links Golf Course in Ventura.
Unfortunately, the rest of the Laser team won't be joining them. In the team competition, IVC finished fourth overall. Only the top two teams in the six-team regional field advanced to state.
Favored Santa Barbara bounced back from a disappointing first day team score to win the tournament.
Foothill Conference champion Palomar rallied from 12 strokes back after the first day to capture second place and move on.
First round leader, Irvine Valley posted
higher than expected final round scores and slipped to fourth place.
However, IVC finished 21 strokes ahead of defending state champion College of the Canyons and 64 strokes ahead of Long Beach City College.
"This team went as far as their talent could take them," said coach
Ben Burnett. "I hoped that we could employ strategy and course management
to get the whole team to the state finals.
"But I am very pleased for the
record setting season that this 2008 IVC team enjoyed. They gave their best effort in every match and produced a record-setting 42-6 record to win the Orange Empire Conference title.
"I look forward to Felicia Titus, Samantha
Roberts and fast improving Bianca Brown to lead us even deeper into
post-season play next year. We plan to compete for the title of state champions."
