Women's golf team wins conference title, So. Cal. Regionals up next
Nov 06, 2008
Mission accomplished for the Irvine Valley women's golf team.
The Lasers defeated three of four opponents over the 36-hole Orange Empire Conference finals played Monday and Wednesday at Los Serranos to win the conference title.
IVC, the favorite heading into the conference finals, finished with a record of 42-6 overall. Second-place Santiago Canyon was at 39-9.
It is the Irvine Valley program's second ever conference title.
The medalist for the finals was Irvine Valley freshman Felicia Titus with a score of 162 (79 on Monday and 83 on Wednesday). Titus, who was the scoring average leader for the conference during the regular match-play season, was named the Orange Empire's player of the year.
Irvine Valley freshman Samantha Roberts was the runner-up for the player of the year award. Roberts shot 88 on Wednesday.
IVC sophomores Courtney Schroeder and Alex Calvillo joined Titus and Roberts on the all-conference team.
The Lasers now move on to the Southern California Regional finals next Monday and Tuesday at Desert Dunes in Desert Hot Springs.
IVC will be trying to finish as one of the top two teams so that it can advance to the State Championships the following week in Ventura.
Other teams joining IVC at the regionals will be Santiago Canyon, Palomar, Long Beach City, Santa Barbara and College of the Canyons.
College of the Canyons won the state title last year and Santa Barbara earned it in 2006.
"Our two top players are freshmen," IVC coach Ben Burnett said. "It has been a long season for them. The team is tired. They have not always shot the scores that I thought they were capable of shooting, however, I have not seen anyone on this team ever give up and just go through the motions to finish a round.
"They realize that they have set school women's golf team records with regards to wins in a season. They are anxious for the opportunity to score some upsets (at the regionals) and be one of the two teams advancing to compete in the state finals."
