Women's golf team moves step closer to title
Oct 23, 2008
All that stands between the Irvine Valley women's golf team and the Orange Empire Conference title is at least a third-place finish at the Orange Empire Conference finals in two weeks.
That is because Irvine Valley won two of four matches in its last conference match of the season. The Lasers shot a score of 365 on Wednesday at Los Serranos North in Chino Hills. Santiago Canyon had a score of 352 and Santa Ana was second at 356.
The two wins improved Irvine Valley's record in conference to 36-4. Santiago Canyon is at 31-9 and Santa Ana has a record of 17-15. Saddleback is fourth at 9-23 and Fullerton rounds out the conference standings at 0-40.
"If IVC places third and that is worst case scenerio at the conference finals, our final conference record will be 40-8," IVC coach Ben Burnett said. "If Santiago Canyon sweeps the conference finals, they end at 39-9."
IVC has been third just once in a conference match this season and that was on Wednesday.
So the conference title should be IVC's.
At Los Serranos North on Wednesday, Sam Roberts led IVC with a score of 87. Felicia Titus came in at 88, Courtney Schroeder and Alex Calvillo were at 95, Bianca Brown scored 97 and Val Watts was at 99.
The 2-2 record came two days after IVC went 3-1 at El Prado in Chino. Both rounds took place in windy conditions.
"Effective play in windy conditions is the toughest challenge in all of golf," Burnett said. "While I was disappointed to see our scores soar on these two windy days, I was not disappointed in their effort. Actually, playing our last two rounds in gusty wind conditions will help prepare the ladies for the So. Cal. Regionals at the Desert Dunes Golf Course."
IVC will play a practice round on Monday at Desert Dunes.
The Lasers will then compete in the conference finals Nov. 3 and 5 at Los Serranos.
