Women's golf team triumphs again
Oct 15, 2008

The Irvine Valley women's golf team shot am impressive team score of 325 to win the latest Orange Empire Conference match on Wednesday.

The Lasers bested Santa Ana's runner-up score by 21 strokes at Arroyo Trabuco.

The competition was switched from Saddleback's traditional home course of Tijeras Creek to Arroyo Trabuco.

"Having never played the course before visiting teams saw tee shots that landed in the middle of the fairway bounce and roll as if they were bouncing down a city street and then curve up to 40 yards off the sloping fairways and into lateral hazards," IVC Coach Ben Burnett said.

Higher scores might have been expected for most, but Laser players handled the course just fine.

IVC freshmen Felicia Titus and Samantha Roberts posted scores in the 70's.

The conference's scoring leader, Titus, earned medalist honors with a 4 over par score of 76.
Her round included two birdies, 10 pars and six bogeys.

Roberts, who is second in the conference in scoring, shot 78 with one birdie, 10 pars and seven bogeys.

Fast improving freshman Bianca Brown had an impressive score of 83 for the Lasers. Her score included two birdies, six pars, eight bogeys, and a double and a triple bogey.

Sophomore Val Watts scored 88 to complete the team total for the Lasers.

Sophomore Alex Cavillo's 89 was a team throwout score. But her final nine holes included a team-leading three birdies, coupled with three pars, a bogey, double bogey and a triple bogey.

Irvine Valley continued to distace itself from the other four schools in persuit of the program's second ever conference title.

"This team continues to create school history," Burnett said.

IVC improved its record to 31-1 in conference. And the one loss was so very close with the Lasers tying Santiago Canyon and then losing on a fifth players' score.

Santiago Canyon hosts the next conference match, next Monday on the Butterfield Course at El Prado.
