Women's golf team picks up 27th win
Oct 13, 2008

Heavy Santa Ana winds uprooted trees and knocked down branches, in Monday's Orange Empire conference match at Riverview.

Never-the-less, freshmen Sam Roberts and Felicia Titus fought through the conditions to lead the Irvine Valley women's golf team to its 27th conferece win.

IVC finished with a team score of 333. Santiago Canyon was next at 337 and Santa Ana came in third at 351. The Lasers improved their conference record to 27-1 overall. Santiago Canyon is next at 21-7.

Roberts, from Woodbridge High in Irvine, played the last nine holes in spectacular fashion. Despite the uncomfortable conditions, her last nine holes included two birdies that offset two bogeys.
She finished the back nine at even par.
And her score of 79 was the low round of the day.

Titus, the conference's scoring leader, had two birdies, five pars, 10 bogeys and one double bogey to finish with a score of 80.

IVC sophomore Val Watts played the final four holes at 1 under par to post a back nine score of 40. Her total score was 86.
And sophomore Courtney Schroeder, after struggling during the opening six holes, played the final 12 holes with six pars and six bogeys to crush Santiago Canyon's hopes of scoring an upset victory.

Freshman Bianca Brown's score of 90 and sophomore Alex Cavillo's score of 92 were the throw-out scores for IVC in the event.

"As uncomfortable and distracting as the weather conditions were for all of the teams, I was pleased with the way our players adjusted," IVC coach Ben Burnett said. "The Southern California Regional Championships will be played at the links style Desert Dunes Golf Course, located near the wind generators as you approach Palm Springs.
"It is possible for wind gusts at that course to be even stronger."

IVC plays its next conference match on Wednesday at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Course. Saddleback will be the host school.
