The Irvine Valley women's golf team captured the trophy at the inaugural Orange Empire Conference League Cup Tournament played at the Riverview Golf Course on Wednesday.
The nonconference tournament followed the Ryder Cup format. Unlike conference matches, where only the best four scores of each team are used to determine a winner, the tournament utilized six scores. The contests were match play rather than medal play.
The goal was to earn points. The first six holes were teams playing alternate shots. The next six holes were teams playing their own ball and using the best of their two scores on each hole. The last six holes were individual, one vs. one match play.
Irvine Valley won the cup trophy with 32 points. Santa Ana earned second place with 29 points and Santiago Canyon was third with 28 points.
Saddleback College was fourth with 13 points. Fullerton did not compete.
"Most of the ladies had no previous experience in Ryder Cup style match play," said IVC coach Ben Burnett. "I was very pleased with the way the our team played the last six holes. If scored in medal play terms, Sam Roberts played the last six holes at 1 under par."
Burnett said using that same format that freshman Felicia Titus would have played the last six holes at even par, sophomore Val Watts at 1 over par, sophomore Alex Calvillo at 2 over par, sophomore Courtney Schroeder at 5 over par and freshman Bianca Brown at 7 over par.
"Our top four finishing scores were outstanding," Burnett said. "It helps prepare the team for the type of scores they must finish with in order to be one of the two out of six teams that will advance from the So. Cal. Regionals to for the state title."
Conference play returns next week for the Lasers. They play at Riverview on Monday and Arroyo Trabuco on Wednesday.
