Lady golfers end season
Nov 06, 2007
The Irvine Valley women's golf season came to a close earlier this week. The Lasers had three players participate in the Southern California Regional finals at the Alisal River course in Solvang.
Irvine Valley College was represented by all-conference players Val Watts, Courtney Schroeder and Katie Parks.
Watts was the most consistent, posting scores of 87 and 88, over the two-day tournament.
Schroeder scored 86 and 95 and Parks scored 89 and 98.
None of the Lasers had among the 12 lowest scores to move on to the state tournament.
"The season was a good learning experience for the ladies on the Irvine Valley College team," said IVC Coach Ben Burnett. "They tell me that they learned what it takes to win and are committed to challenge for the conference championship, next season.
"I see no reason why these ladies, if they dedicate themselves to continue to play and practice during the spring and summer months, should ever score above 85, next season.
"In fact, I would expect two of the four ladies returning to form the heart of next year's team to post some scores in the 70's. With the addition of one or two key recruits, I can see where competing for next season's conference championship is a realistic goal."
College of the Canyons won the team title at the Regionals with Santa Barbara taking second and Santiago Canyon placing third. Canyons and Santa Barbara were the teams to move on to state.
Only one player from the Orange Empire Conference qualified for State and that was Santiago Canyon's Esther Lee as an individual. She shot scores of 78 and 79.
