Women's golf team beats Saddleback
Oct 20, 2007
Paced by Val Watts, the Irvine Valley women's golf team defeated Saddleback and Santa Ana at Tijeras Creek on Wednesday.
The Lasers lost to Santiago Canyon, which went undefeated on the day. Santiago Canyon's No. 3 player, Jessica Ko, posted the low score of the day with a 76.
Watts' score of 80 was the second lowest score.
Courtney Schroedrer's 87, Ashley Silver's 88 and Katie Park's 91 helped secure the two victories for IVC.
Even though Irvine Valley defeated Saddleback, the Gauchos clinched second place in the conference when they beat Santa Ana.
Saddleback and Santa Ana each finished with scores of 350, but Saddleback won the tiebreaker.
IVC will now prepare for conference finals Oct. 29 and Oct. 31 at Los Serranos in Chino Hills.
As a result of the new scoring system being tried this season with just four teams in conference, the Orange Empire Conference finals do not supply enough points for IVC to pass champion Santiago Canyon or second place Saddleback.
Those two teams will move on from the conference to the Southern California Regionals.
The only issue that remains to be settled is to identify the 12 individual conference players that will advance to the SoCal Regionals.
Going into conference Finals, Schroeder is tied for the third best scoring average.
Watts is only one stroke behind Santiago Canyon's Ko.
Parks is the 11th best scoring with a four stroke lead over Santa Ana's Christi Whittemore.
Silver and Calvillo are holding down 13th and 14th place.
Silver will need to pick up eight strokes and Alex needs to gain 11 strokes over the two-day conference finals.
