Paced by freshman Courtney Schroeder, the Irvine Valley women's golf team defeated Saddleback and Santa Ana at the Riverview Golf Course in Wednesday's Orange Empire Conference opening match.
IVC ended up with a record of 2-1 on the day.
On a windy day at Riverview, the Lasers finished with a team total of 348. Santa Ana was at 360 and Saddleback came in at 368.
Santiago Canyon, which is the conference favorite, finished at 324 and earned three wins on the day. Santa Ana went 1-2 and Saddleback earned three losses.
Schroeder's score of 82 tied for the fourth best score of the day. Santiago Canyon's Courtney Salomanson was the medalist witha score of 73.
First-year IVC player Valerie Watts had the day's next best score for the Lasers at 85.
Freshman Alex Calvillo scored 89, freshman Katie Parks posted a 92 and sophomore and team captain Ashley Silver capped the IVC scoring with a 94.
'I'm pleased with the progress of this young squad," IVC Coach Ben Burnett said. "They have often scored in the middle to low 80s and are getting accustomed to holding their focus for 18 hole rounds of golf. High school matches consist of nine hole contests."
Irvine Valley plays again next Monday. Saddleback will be hosting the match at Tijeras Creek. Then on Wednesday, IVC will host the the rest of the conference at Oak Creek.
