The Irvine Valley women's golf team is on the outside looking in on a spot to advance to the regional playoffs as it gets ready for the Orange Empire Conference Championships next Monday and Wednesday at Los Serranos Golf Course in Chino Hills.
Monday's matches will be played on the par 74 South Course and Wednesday's matches will be on the par 72 North Course.
Irvine Valley is coming off three consecutive losses. It was upset by Santiago Canyon and then dropped contests to Golden West and Saddleback. The defeats dropped the team into third place in the conference standings with a record of 6-4.
The top two teams from the conference advance to the Southern California Regional Playoffs. Saddleback and Golden West hold those positions heading into the conference finals.
“We have an outside chance of defeating Golden West to end the season tied for second place,” Irvine Valley Coach Ben Burnett said. “If that happens, however, the first tie breaker looks like it will give second place to Golden West.”
Burnett is still confident that a player or two on his team can qualify as individuals for the regionals. There is likely to be three individual golfers not on teams that qualify that move on.
"I think Debbie Firman, Ailam Truong, Carla Chavez and Hiroko Hibara will battle it out to earn a spot," Burnett said.
Truong finished the regular season 10th in the conference’s low score average for 18 holes at 90.14 and Firman was 13th at 93.29.
