Women's golf team upsets Golden West
Oct 04, 2005
The Irvine Valley women's golf team handed Golden West its first loss in Orange Empire Conference play Monday at Oak Creek.
Golden
West entered play on Monday with a record of 6-0 in conference. It left
at 6-1 after Irvine Valley beat the Rustlers by nine strokes.
The
Lasers finished with a total of 368. Golden West was next at 377. Santa
Ana was also involved in the match, but didn't score as a team because
it didn't have enough players.
With the two wins Irvine Valley improved its record to 4-1 in conference.
“This
is a good, upset victory, for the our team,” Irvine Valley Coach
Ben Burnett said. “On paper, Golden West figured to defeat us by about
40 to 50 strokes.
"This upset victory brings us closer
together as a team. With only one veteran player on this year’s
squad, such an upset gives us a platform to build on, for the rest of
this season and next year."
The veteran player, returning sophomore Debbie Firman, led the Lasers with a score of 86. She was the medalist in the match.
Freshman
Ailam Troung was next at 90. Freshman Hiroko Hibara finished at 94 and
freshman Carla Chavez carded a 98 to round out Irvine Valley's scoring.
"I
am hopeful that each lady on this IVC team realized that the key to a
victory like this was to keep the ball in play, have a
game plan, and be patient," Burnett said.
Irvine Valley
was to play again on Wednesday, traveling to El Prado Golf Course in
Chino to play Santiago Canyon College. Saddleback was also to play in
the match.
